12:20 | Conquering a Male Domain : The Female Spectator and The Pershy Vinok PRESENTER: Iryna Dyrda ABSTRACT. This research paper aims at giving a broad outline of pioneering journalistic projects in England and Ukraine – periodicals The Female Spectator and The Pershyi vinok which were written by and for women. It surveys a scope of the two collections, the main genre forms, themes, characters as well as their significance in the history of English and Ukrainian literary journalism and literature in general. The authors hope that the article will find a wide audience interested in prominent and less known names of those women writers who not only opened up a new era of conquering the domain originally taken by men but contributed to the rise of literary journalism in both countries as well. By using recurring themes, motifs, myths the editors of the women’s journals Haywood, Kobrynska, Pchilka together with other women authors created heroines enabling the reader to see the patters of feminine behavior and ponder over the problem of quest for female identity. The study clearly indicates that these fascinating journalistic projects hold a significant place in proto-feminist and feminist history of both countries considering the fact that they made women’s concerns sound palatable and important, assisted English and Ukrainian women to define their roles within the then social context and challenged the status quo of the deeply ingrained norms related to a woman’s place in society. |
12:40 | Functions of Gastronomic Images in the Novel Ni Ève, Ni Adam by Amélie Nothomb PRESENTER: Tetiana Cherkashyna ABSTRACT. The article analyses problems of intercultural communication through the prism of gastronomic images. The study is based on the novel Ni Ève, ni Adam by the Modern French-speaking Belgian writer Amélie Nothomb. This novel is part of the autobiographical hypertext of the writer, contains recognizable autobiographems, it is the artistic reproduction of an episode in her real life. Most of the narrated episodes take place in Japan. The main plot is built upon the love story between a French-speaking Belgian girl and a Japanese boy. The main characters of the novel appear as atypical representatives of their national traditions; the girl of Belgian origins is in love with Japan and its culture, as well as the Japanese man prefers European traditions. Through their tastes these two main characters get to know each other, as well as their culture, tradition and mindsets. Japanese gastronomic discourse is presented more broadly than the Belgian one. It is represented by the names and descriptions of national Japanese dishes, drinks, Japanese culinary traditions, rituals. Belgian gastronomic discourse is almost absent in the novel, because it fits into a broader European discourse, represented mainly by European international dishes. The gastronomic discourse of the novel is a means of characterizing the protagonists, their psychological and social portrait. The mixing of gender and social roles of the characters is shown through the tastes. Gastronomic images become memory boosters, causing the ‘effect of a madeleine cookie by Marcel Proust’. Keywords: gastronomic discourse, gastronomic images, national gastronomic images, intercultural communication, autobiographical discourse, Japanese culinary traditions. |

13:20 | The habitus of Kyiv in the epic works by the writers of the literary group “Lanka”-MARS PRESENTER: Olha Kryzhanovska ABSTRACT. The research paper highlights the binary opposition of the masculine and the feminine in the urban habitus of Kyiv. The methodology of research of masculine and feminine aspects of urban habitus makes it possible to understand the connection of spatial dominants of the topos with all components of artistic texts. The masculine topos of Kyiv is embodied through the spatial vertical and incarnates the success of the characters, their socio-political life. The feminine habitus of Kyiv is embodied through the spatial horizontal and incarnates the “low” life of the characters, poverty, anti-urban leitmotifs. The research paper reveals Kyiv habitus in the epic works of writers of the Ukrainian literary group “Lanka”-MARS. The spatial characteristics of Kyiv and all components of poetics of works by Borys Teneta, Maria Galych, Hryhorii Kosynka, Borys Antonenko-Davydovych testify to the embodiment of feminine urban habitus. Valerian Pidmohylny's novel “Misto” demonstrates the binary opposition of feminine and masculine in Kyiv topos and represents the path of the character's ascent from the low (feminine) to the high (masculine) urban habitus of Kyiv. |

14:00 | Innovation Of Traditional Methods Of Psychologism In P. Merimee's And M. Kotsyubynskyi's Short Stories ABSTRACT. “Transitional” periods in the literature, characterized by rapid changes in the socio-political and spiritual-cultural spheres, determine a new vision of person, emphasizing person's inner complexity and versatility. Such situation stimulates the search for innovative methods of psychologism. In the article it is highlighted the originality of the psychologism P. Merimee's and M. Kotsyubynskyi's short stories through the prism of permanent, typical features of European psychological prose. It is noted that in P. Merimee's psychologism was conditioned by historical and social influence and had an analytical character, which is characterized by the conditioning of the inner self by external factors and causes of the bourgeois or exotic environment. In the literary texts of the French writer, whose realism has acquired romantic color, romantic elements (folklore, ethnic exotics, fantastic, fiction, dream motive, strong personality image , elements of Orientalism, etc.) are used to deepen the general psychologization of works. It is proved that P. Merimee uses an indirect form of psychologism to depict the inner world of his characters, using such means as mimic, gestures, movements, action, author's irony, subtext, silence and so on. M. Kotsyubynskyi's psychologism, taking into account the achievements of Ukrainian and Western European psychological prose, acquires a modern character. The writer's attention is transferred to human private «microcosm», person's psycho-emotional sphere. In his short stories M. Kotsyubynskyi used together with the traditional indirect form of psychologism the direct form, which becomes dominant for his work. To recreate the psychology of his characters, the writer uses such innovative means for his time as the replacement of external events with internal, attention is focused on the intensity of the characters' inner experiences, associative jumps, the writer's inner monologue approaching the “stream of consciousness”, etc. |
14:20 | Comparative Projections of “LIFE IS A FAIR” Model in Artistic Consciousness at the turn of the nineteenth–twentieth centuries: Realistic and Modernist Tendencies PRESENTER: Nailia Khairulina ABSTRACT. The article comprehensively reveals how the artistic model of “life is a fair” functions in realistic and modernist Ukrainian and English literature. In the article under consideration, the model “Life is a Fair” is one variant of the world’s artistic design with a system of values, specific types of characters. The works unite a standard world model, a writer’s reaction to challenges for a person’s transformation to the goods. The study aims to identify the artistic model of “life is a fair” in realistic and modernist Ukrainian and English literary works. The authors aim to reveal the artistic model through the characteristics of the main characters, who live by the principle that everything is sold and bought. This motto is very relevant today. The research methodology grounds on the involvement of comparative-typological, cultural-historical, mythopoetic, and semiotic methods. The integration of the semiotic approach into the methodology of literary criticism has conditioned the functioning of the actual concept of “model” in its terminology. As a result of a comparative study of precedent texts, the specifics of the transformation of the plot motive of the fair into a model of individual-authorial picture of the world in the texts of realism, early and mature modernism were revealed. The research results intend to create a basis for a comparative study of the artistic model of “life as a fair” in the literature of postmodernism and metamodernism. Keywords: Artistic Model “Life is a Fair,” Semiotics, Realism, Modernism, Сomparative Studies, Motive |

15:00 | SLAVIC PAREMIOLOGY AS A LINGUISTIC SCIENCE: TRADITIONAL AND CONTEMPORARY TRENDS PRESENTER: Natalia Sharmanova ABSTRACT. The present paper aims at revisiting the Slavic paroemiology as a linguistic science, from the perspective of new trends, generally accepted scientific and linguistic methods, and approaches to its interpretation in the language structure via the descriptive way of theoretical approaches. The challenges for the contemporary linguistics may be found with the novices in contemporary paroemiological studies, ethnolinguistic and linguocultural bases of paroemia research, and paroemiology in a paradigmatic context. The paper is a purely analytical research into the development of theoretical foundations of Slavic paroemiology. It is revealed what are the main general approaches to contemporary understanding of paroemiology in terms of traditions and innovations, and in fact in the context of paradigmatic determinism. It is believed that the study of Slavic paroemiology should be based on the multipolar plane of scientific ideas, schools and areas of contemporary linguistics and on identifying priorities in modern language science, taking into account the established trends and outlining the prospects for further development of paroemiological research. Slavic paroemiology as a modern linguistic branch specializes in the interpretation of ethnolinguistic phenomena in terms of ethnolinguistics and linguocultural studies, in the light of the theories of the linguistic picture of the world and ethnoconsciousness, the paradigm approach, and in particular, the structure of the linguistic macroparadigm, which is based on the anthropocentrism of language. It is relevant to address the debatable issues of paroemiological studies, the use of cognitive-pragmatic subparadigm of language and interpretive linguistics, the theory of precedent and the theory of intertextuality to describe paroemic meanings, to emphasize the study of the functioning of paroemias in various discursive practices. The traditional and new approaches help approach the solution of paroemiological problems in a new way and disclose applied discursive aspects of paroemiology at the present stage. This is where the research questions and objective of the theoretical research arise as offered to the respected linguistic community. |

This work is carried out in the framework of linguoculturology and the theory of linguocultural types as one of the current trends in modern linguistics. The article considers the linguocultural type "Prominente / Prominenter" as a special type of the concept. The choice of the object of study is dictated by the lack of its research in linguistic works. The phenomenon "Prominente / Prominenter" is widespread in modern German society and is present in all spheres. But so far, this social and cultural phenomenon has only been studied in sociology, cultural studies, and communication theory. The linguocultural type "Prominente/ Prominente" is of interest precisely as an object of linguistic research, because the culture of self-expression is closely connected with the verbal self-presentation of the subject in social relations, and the representation of experience directly concerns the mentality. We proceed from the assumption that in German linguoculture there exists linguocultural type "Prominente/ Prominenter" as a variant of the basic concept "prominent", which represents a culturally specific personality, i.e., a typified person identified by certain specific characteristics of verbal and non-verbal behavior and values-based orientations. Based on the specifics of the object, subject, and material of the research, we define the methodology, methods, and techniques of constructing the concept. Scientific and linguistic definitions of the concept "Prominente/ Prominenter" are considered. An etymological commentary on the key words of the concept is provided. Synonyms of key words prominent, Prominente / Prominenter as verbalizers of linguocultural type are identified and analyzed based on German-language printed and electronic lexicographic sources. The analysis of synonymic rows reveals the words extending the conceptual features, which are singled out in the dictionary definitions. It is established that verbalizers of the conceptual side of the construct are replenished at the expense of word-formation activity of key words of the investigated concept. The results of the analysis of the material are summarized and the prospects for further research are outlined. Keywords: concept, conceptual analysis, linguocultural type, synonymic row, etymological analysis. |
15:40 | Using English Borrowings in Modern Ukrainian Advertising PRESENTER: Liudmyla Bakhmat ABSTRACT. Due to globalization, the Ukrainian language is aggressively bombarded with internationalisms and foreign borrowings. Currently, anglicisms are being actively introduced. With a shift to market economy, advertising has turned into an important factor of social developments and recent trends. Thus, the study of English borrowings in Ukrainian marketing is essential. The paper reviews the theoretical concepts of anglicisms, the history of borrowings and the current situation. First, the paper analyzes EFFIE Awards 2020 nominees in order to specify whether advertisements containing anglicisms are generally accepted and nominated for the Grand Prix categories. Next, the research focus is defined as two domains: technology and construction, where ad campaigns, names and advertisements are analyzed. Along the way, the reasons for English borrowings in each case are studied. The research results prove that in the technological domain, anglicisms are used in the original and as transliterations. They mostly denote new concepts with no Ukrainian equivalents and are easy to understand (except technical terms and abbreviations). However, the analysis of anglicisms in construction, particularly the names of apartment complexes in the biggest cities of Ukraine, proves that they have Ukrainian equivalents and introduce no new realia. Moreover, luxurious and expensive apartments tend to use anglicisms more often than economy class apartments. This means that English borrowings are used solely to make offers and products stand out as the concept of foreignness is supposed to attract attention implying prestige, better quality and stature of owners. Here five categories of borrowings are highlighted: 1) in the original graphical form, 2) in the Cyrillic script, 3) hybrids, 4) transliterations, 5) anglicisms with spelling errors. The conclusion is made that anglicisms in technology are used to fill in the lexical gaps of Ukrainian, while in construction, they are mostly excessive, introducing no new concepts. |
16:00 | Linguo-Cognitive nature of God concept in B.-I. Antonych and J. Twardowski's poetics PRESENTER: Veronika Chaikivska ABSTRACT. The article is devoted to analyzing the linguocognitive nature of the concept of GOD in two national ethnolinguistic cultures - Ukrainian and Polish. The study is based on the best philosophical and religious texts represented by the works of B.-I. Antonych and J. Twardowski. Given the objective complexity and general lack of research on the whole set of problems associated with the analysis of religious poetry and the delineation of a new linguistic approach to its analysis, the topic of the article is relevant. The purpose of the investigation was to find out the peculiarities of the linguization of the concept of GOD in the Ukrainian and Polish linguistic and cultural traditions. The primary research method was conceptual analysis. The peculiarities of verbalization of the concept of GOD and its semantic-axiological nature in B.-I. Antonych and J. Twardowski’s poetic texts were revealed in the course of the research. It is established that in the poetics of B.-I. Antonych nominative field of the studied concept includes significantly more names, among which there are many bright personal authorial paraphrases. As for the semantics, in both authors’ works, the concept of GOD is used as a polysemantic, cognitive psycholinguistic phenomenon. For the most part, individual conceptual meanings in its structure are positively marked and evidenced by the numerous metrical feet. The study showed that the innovative pursuits of both writers in religious and philosophical poetry fit organically into the general aesthetic and ideological paradigm, in which in the twentieth century, not only European but also world culture developed. Comprehension of the concept of God inspired B.-I. Antonych and J. Twardowski with powerful energy, encouraging new ways of image creation, previously unknown in either Ukrainian or Polish religious poetry. The potential application of our research would be, on the one hand, in the further study of the sacred, and on the other - in the study of the other famous figures’ language practices n different national cultures. |

16:40 | Food (glutonic) linguocode in the typology of cultural codes ABSTRACT. The article deals with the concept of “cultural code”, actual approaches to the classification of the codes within the cultural framework. This work also represents the general typology of cultural codes, which can be considered as verbal or nonverbal. The last includes visual, auditory, tactile, odorous subtypes. The verbal type is qualified through exponential signs of material and nonmaterial (intellectual) items of culture. Taking into consideration differences of the sings which are culturally marked, the linguocodes are divided into 1) national and cultural linguocode; 2) international and cultural linguocode; 3) subcultural linguocode. We also investigate partial branching of the national and cultural linguocode, which includes biotic and abiotic subtypes. The biotic sybtype comprises of anthropic and organic (animal / plant) linguocodes. The abiotic sybtype unites natural and artefactual linguocodes. Food, which is also called glutonic, linguocode belongs to the subtypes of artifactual verbal national and cultural linguocode. The glutonic linguocode together with other codes which are not being discussed in the given research, continues the classification scheme, in particular provides a thematic taxonomy. This code carries the system of conventional signs which have balanced themselves in the language system after approbation in the oral practice of nutrition. The glutonic linguocode provides the connection between the sign and the meaning which promotes the transfer of glutonic nomination (plane of expression) into the area of meaning (plane of content). Key words: cultural code, verbal / nonverbal code, linguocode, national and cultural / international and cultural / subcultural linguocode, biotic / abiotic linguocode, anthropic / organic (plant / animal) linguocode, natural / artefactual linguocode, food (glutonic) linguocode. |
17:00 | Children’s Books on WWII within the Collective Memory of the Ukrainian Diaspora ABSTRACT. The article deals with the issue of World War II (WWII) in the books for children by the Ukrainian Diaspora of the twentieth century. Along with other works on WWII theme in world literature, books by Ukrainian Diasporic writers for children and young adults (YA) such as Bodnarchuk’s Kladka (Small Bridge), Bryzghun-Shanta’s Moia Taiemnytsia (My Secret), Dmytrenko’s Mykhailyk, and Tsehelska’s Petruseva Povist (Petrusev’s Story) depict WWII and its consequences for Ukrainians. I claim that Ukrainian works on WWII theme are based on the collective memory theory referred to by Maurice Halbwachs and Barbara Shatska. My position is that WWII theme in children’s literature is centered closely on the collective memory of the Ukrainian Diaspora. In reference to Halbwachs’ interpretation of collective memory as a way of group identity, awareness of the general past, significant values, and symbols, I consider collective memory in children’s literature as a necessary way to deal with the traumatic experience of the Ukrainian Diaspora. My analysis then focuses on the investigation of how these concepts are implemented in children’s books. |
17:20 | “Literature of Migration” vs “Literatura Emihratsii”: Defining a New Trend in Ukrainian Literature ABSTRACT. The author identifies 19 literary publications about Ukrainian women emigrants and women’s emigration, published in Ukraine and elsewhere between 2000 and 2013. Considering lack of consistency and unanimously accepted terminology when describing these publications, the author suggests to consider the identified texts a separate literary trend worthy of consideration. Following a brief overview of the existing terminology about “(e)migration” and “literature” in a European context, the author proposes to use Adelson’s term “literature of migration” as the most suitable thematic and descriptive term with which to analyze the recent literary explorations of women’s emigration from Ukraine. |
12:00 | NATURAL LANGUAGES VS LANGUAGES OF AUGMENTED REALITY PRESENTER: Olena Panchenko ABSTRACT. The article deals with the problem of mutual interaction of natural languages and the artificial languages which appear in augmented reality. The artificial languages which have recently appeared are creolized linguistic units, leet, LOL, texting, programming languages etc. Their origin is connected with natural language but then they change themselves and change natural languages. The main tendencies of these changes are a wide usage of shortenings, breaking the spelling rules, addition of sound support etc. as a result a natural language has got a new form keeping the same meanings. |

13:00 | The Translation Features of the Connotative Vocabulary PRESENTER: Valentyna Karpiuk ABSTRACT. The article considers the problem of translating a connotative vocabulary from German into Ukrainian, defines the concept of a connotation and its characteristic features, presents the main translation methods of and the motives for their use. The importance and complexity of achieving equivalence in the process of translating a connotative vocabulary has been substantiated. The contradictions, that have identified the linguistic problem of choosing a particular translation method to achieve a connotative equivalence, are identified. The theoretical foundations of the study are described. It has been established that the degree of the translation equivalence also depends on the extent to which the norms of the target language can be objectively observed in the translation. In this respect, the criteria for translation into the native language are naturally higher than the corresponding criteria for translation from the native language into the foreign one. It is noted that the connotation can accompany the semantics of the unit at all levels of the language and are actualized in the language by colouring the speech actions of a person, thus performing the specific function of the language. It is emphasized that one of the determining factors of an equivalent translation is the connotative equivalence, namely, the connotations that are used in the text by the nature of verbalisation. (In particular, through a specific choice between a synonymous or quasi-synonymous way of expressing expression), by style, sociolect and geographic dimension, frequency, etc. The main requirements that determine the communicative equivalence of a new text in relation to the original are presented, as well as the classification of connotative dimensions related to a translation, which help to classify connotative meanings. The research results are summarized and the prospects for further research are indicated. |
13:20 | Intercultural Aspect of Immigrant Adaptation in Jhumpa Lahiri’s This Blessed House PRESENTER: Maryna Bryk ABSTRACT. Globalization processes and active international contacts caused the need for effective social politics aimed at promoting global stability. The latest decades saw the transition from traditional multiculturality to transculturality. Transcultural approach brings to light what is common notwithstanding the existing cultural differences. Thus cultures are viewed as related entities and communication as the most important dimension of transculturality. Modern literature also acquired transcultural features. The works created by migrant writers function as a means of communication between different cultural communities. The study aims to analyse the features of immigrant cultural adaptation in Jhumpa Lahiri’s novel “This Blessed House”. The difference between the author’s native culture and the culture she lives in provides the possibility to describe the society from both insider’s and outsider’s perspective. The multicultural trends influence the author’s personality resulting in the variety of images, associations and beliefs applied in the literary text. Intercultural relationship is the most vividly presented when it comes to the perception of cultural units. In the story “This Blessed House” they comprise culture-specific items, traditions, cultural values and artefacts. Their contextual setting contains characters’ attitudes, judgements and opinions expressing cultural, social and religious beliefs. The main characters, a young Indian couple, illustrate totally different ways of cultural adaptation. The discovery of some Christian artefacts left by the previous owners in the house provokes their specific feelings and behaviour. As a result, Sanjeev and Twinkle demonstrate completely different attitudes towards religious beliefs, their native culture and traditions. Having lived in America for quite a long period, Sanjeev stays faithful to Indian culture and highly appreciates the rules of patriarchal society. He refuses to let the “other” culture into his life notwithstanding the desire to fit in. Twinkle, on the contrary, possesses “chameleonic” ability to adapt. Her unwillingness to obey patriarchal rules, passion for Christian artefacts and respect for other religion are harmoniously combined with the faithfulness to her native Indian culture. The girl respects her parents and their will, she wears traditional clothes, learns to cook traditional dishes and is able to live up to current moment without focusing on the otherness of American society and her personal distinctions. Twinkle acts as a cultural broker mediating the relationship between the cultures encountering and demonstrates gradual shifting to transculturality. |
13:40 | Hieroglyphic Semiotics of Emoji Signs in Digital Communication PRESENTER: Rusudan Makhachashvili ABSTRACT. This paper is a parcel of a series of studies carried out by the group of authors on the structural and systemic specifics of the artificial language emoji. In this study, this problem is considered through the prism of two linguistic dimensions of existence - natural language (Chinese) and artificial (emoji). This approach is related to the semiotic nature of languages - hieroglyphics (Chinese), iconicity (emoji), the structure of which implies an aletic (from the Greek άλήθεια - truth) sign in terms of content and expression. Taking into account the specifics of the use of hieroglyphic and iconic writing in digital communication, an empirical experiment was conducted with the method of transformation of hieroglyphic and iconic signs, the denotation of which is the "sun". In addition, the formalization of the form of signs and comparative analysis of the elements of the whole sign with consistent approbation of their integral form and content proved that the occasional is a rectangular form of the Chinese character "sun", its perception - completely usual rays in the form of lines around it, where the geometric figure of the circle is qualia. The results of the experiment allowed to fractalize the scheme as a complex implicative statement, in which the deductivization of the sign explains its main stages (ontological denotation, conceptual denotation, lingual denotation), which provided for the formalization of the content plane in the digital transformation of the expression plane, the approbation of the emoji sign via the Lexonomy digital lexicographic system. In view of all the above, the phenomenological specificity of natural languages, as well as ICT allowed us to determine the hieroglyphic and iconic signs of the logos. The sample of the generation of the emoji sign is disclosed, which is based on the signs of the alternative model of digital presentation of fiction created with the help of the Emoji-Maker platform and tested by linguists-in-training |
14:00 | Using Online Lexicons as Sources of Domain-specific Terminology in Translation PRESENTER: Svitlana Amelina ABSTRACT. The paper focuses on the use of online lexicons in the translation process. A number of online lexicons containing agricultural and environmental terminology are considered. It analyses the ways in which translators use online lexicons and finds that they can be a source of terminological and supplementary information. Comparisons have been made between the printed and online versions of the lexicons and a number of advantages of the online lexicons have been identified. The continual updating of the entries in the online lexicons and the increasing amount of data contained in them were found out. The usefulness of hyperlinks, which allow the use of not only one particular lexicon but also other related Internet sources, is highlighted. |
