14:30-16:30 Pre-Conference Student Meet and Greet

Calling all students attending the IEA 2021 Conference! On Sunday June 13th from 2:30-4:30 PST we will be hosting a meet and greet event to event to give you the chance to network with other students with an interest in ergonomics from across the globe. Following a meet and greet period we will also be hosting a trivia event where there is a chance for you to win some great prizes! While unfortunately we are not able to attend IEA in person, the trivia will have a focus on cool facts about Vancouver and Canada so we can all get some (virtual) exposure to this interesting part of the world. If you are interested in meeting some fellow students, having some fun, and potentially winning some prizes please register for this pre-conference session using the following link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSce5GFCa_r3E72Df3OXqiWOGBo0emNaoEmBlfs6o3Dsk61dUg/viewform?usp=sf_link We hope to see you all there!

Virtual Tour Hosted by Alison Novak and Sophia Li of KITE Research Institute

Tour one of the world’s most advanced rehabilitation research and development centre - KITE at Toronto Rehab-University Health Network - a place where new treatments and technologies have been developed for people recovering from and living with disabling injury or illness. You will have opportunities to visit the Challenging Environment Assessment Laboratory, the only facility of its kind in the world. This massive underground lab features one of the most advanced hydraulic motion simulators. This simulator can be integrated with four customizable testing environments that enable researchers to recreate and evaluate conditions such as ice and snow, different terrains and slopes, and driving conditions involving rain and headlight glare. These world-class facilities allow researchers to safely and accurately measure the difficulties encountered in the real world. The labs are also used to evaluate the impact of new treatments, devices and technologies developed at KITE, Toronto Rehab - University Health Network.

06:00-07:30 Session 6L: Human Factors in Robotics Panel - Exoskeleton Studies in Industrial Settings

Industry interest in the use of exoskeletons to reduce worker physical loading and fatigue (and thus musculoskeletal injury and illness) continues to accelerate globally.  As the market for exoskeletons continues to grow, the development and refinement of exoskeleton designs also expands.  While numerous studies on the potential benefits of exoskeletons, most to date have involved only small numbers of participants in laboratory settings on simulated tasks and as such makes it difficult to draw firm conclusions about the benefits of industrial exoskeleton in real work situations.  Note: Sessions of this Symposium will all cover aspects of exoskeleton research.

This discussion panel presents and discusses the results of studies that involved the use of exoskeletons in industrial situations using real workers.  Joel Cort will present the results of his studies in automotive plants using industrial workers.  Carisa Harris-Adamson will discuss issues related to the introduction and use of exoskeletons in the construction industry.  Researchers from Stellantis (formerly FCA) will discuss collaborative approaches in benchmarking, testing and introducing exoskeletons in their global operations. Stefano Toxiri, Simona Crea and Frank Krause will each give brief summaries of their papers on exoskeleton field trials.  Significant time will be devoted to the discussion by the panelists of the benefits and challenges of conducting exoskeleton studies under field conditions and contrasting this experience with laboratory studies.  The panel will also be open to questions from the attendees.
