Perspetivas de Estudantes do Ensino Superior Politécnico sobre a Transição para o Ensino Remoto de Emergência / Higher Education Polytechnic Students’ Perspectives on the Transition to Emergency Remote Teaching

ABSTRACT. A pandemia da COVID-19 forçou as instituições de ensino superior a realizar uma transição súbita do ensino presencial para o ensino remoto, o que envolveu um enorme esforço de todos os envolvidos na adaptação a um novo sistema de aprendizagem. Este trabalho apresenta os resultados preliminares de um estudo mais alargado sobre as perspetivas dos estudantes sobre o ensino remoto de emergência. O tratamento dos questionários aplicados aos estudantes de uma instituição de ensino superior portuguesa evidencia os principais aspetos positivos e negativos vivenciados, trazendo contributos para a discussão sobre fatores que determinam o sucesso do ensino remoto e para a preparação do próximo semestre.

COVID-19 pandemic forced higher education institutions to make a sudden transition from face-to-face to distance learning, which involved a huge effort by all those involved in adapting to a new learning system. The analysis of students’ responses to questionnaires applied in a Portuguese higher education institution highlighted the main positive and negative aspects experienced, bringing contributions to a discussion on factors that determine the success of remote education and the preparation of the next semester.

Machine Learning Techniques Applied to the Brazilian Distance Education

ABSTRACT. Tackling student evasion has been a major challenge for the Brazilian Educational System. In the last few years, there has been an increasing interest in Distance Education to address such an important issue. This new paradigm facilitates the attendance of students who have difficulties in attending classes in person due to work, geographical or socioeconomic reasons. However, Distance Education has also shown a growing number of evading students. To tackle Distance Education evasion, we propose the use of Data Mining and Machine Learning techniques to predict the number of students at risk of evasion. Such an approach might help Education Institutions to quantify, plan and develop solutions to this problem. Our work employs Decision Trees, Bootstrap Aggregating Ensemble, Multilayer Perceptron and Support Vector Machines to produce accurate estimates of evading students in Higher Education Institutions that have Distance Education programs. Our experiments showed that our approach could deliver good generalization performance.

Una ontología para conectar aprendizaje formal e informal en entornos inteligentes de aprendizaje

ABSTRACT. Los entornos de aprendizaje inteligentes (SLE) proponen situaciones de aprendizaje a través de contextos formales e informales, utilizando para ello tecnologías diversas. Para ello es necesario contar con un modelo de datos que permita compartir información entre dichas tecnologías y que tenga en cuenta las particularidades de los SLE. El presente artículo propone una ontología con esta finalidad. La propuesta parte de un ejemplo que ilustra el tipo de escenario que se da en los SLE, considerando aspectos como la integración de tecnología diversa, la personalización del proceso de aprendizaje y la conexión del aprendizaje en entornos formales e informales. A partir de estos aspectos -recogidos en la literatura y ejemplificados en el escenario- se extienden modelos de datos existentes para satisfacer las necesidades de los SLE. Esta extensión permite definir una red de actores y artefactos de aprendizaje enlazados por sus temas de interés, así como relacionar actividades de aprendizaje con contextos formales o informales. También se propone una implementación de este modelo en una ontología utilizando tecnologías de la Web Semántica para así favorecer la integración de datos ofrecidos por terceros. Esta integración se acometerá en un futuro para así poder dar soporte a situaciones de aprendizaje como la representada en el escenario propuesto.

Smart Learning Environments (SLEs) exploit a variety of technologies to carry out learning situations in formal and informal contexts. For this purpose, SLEs need to count with a data model that allows these different technologies to share data, taking also into account the special needs of SLEs. With this aim, the present paper proposes an ontology. By means of a scenario, we illustrate the ontology requirements, taking several aspects into account such as the integration of technology, the personalization of the learning process and the relationship between formal and informal learning. Out of these aspects -obtained from the literature and illustrated by the scenario- we extended existing data models to satisfy the needs of SLEs. This extension enables the definition of a network of actors and artifacts linked by their topics of interests, as well as the relationship of learning activities with formal and informal contexts. We also propose an ontology that implements this data model exploiting the Semantic Web technologies; thus, it is possible to integrate data offered by third parties. This data integration will be carried out in the future in order to support learning situations similar to the one presented in the scenario.

Adaptación de la asignatura ingeniería de software durante el período de confinamiento

ABSTRACT. La crisis sanitaria mundial ha afectado a todos los ámbitos de la sociedad. En el contexto educativo español, las instituciones de educación superior interrumpieron las clases presenciales un mes después del comienzo del segundo trimestre. Un mes más tarde, tras adaptar la enseñanza presencial al enfoque online y considerar los diferentes escenarios posibles, las universidades españolas decidieron continuar con la enseñanza online hasta el final del año académico. En este contexto, los profesores tuvieron que adaptar sus asignaturas a una modalidad de aprendizaje que implica el uso de la tecnología y un cambio en las metodologías en la mayoría de los casos. El presente trabajo tiene por objeto describir un caso de éxito basado en la planificación, la comunicación y las metodologías activas, en el que la transformación de una modalidad de aprendizaje presencial a un enfoque en línea se ha llevado a cabo de manera transparente, manteniendo el enfoque propuesto desde el principio del curso. Los resultados se ven confirmados por el alto grado de satisfacción de los alumnos.

Reflections on Distance Education as an alternative to emergency situations that require Social Isolation at the Instituto Federal do Espírito Santo

ABSTRACT. English: Discussions around the world caused by the COVID-19 pandemic moved several areas of knowledge, including Education. In this scenario, the functioning of schools was much debated, especially in public institutions, which has a percentage of students in social vulnerability and issues involving the distance modality.This quantitative research presents a mapping carried out at the Federal Institute of Espírito Santo with the objective of knowing the reality of students in terms of digital inclusion for decision making. The results point to solutions related to vulnerability issues, as well as regulation and training to ensure the quality of the courses offered, even in exceptionality in times of pandemic.

Português: As discussões em todo o mundo ocasionadas pela pandemia do COVID-19 movimentaram diversas áreas de conhecimentos, dentre elas a Educação. Nesse cenário, o funcionamento das escolas foi muito debatido, em especial, nas instituições públicas, que possui um percentual de alunos em vulnerabilidade social e questões que envolvem a modalidade a distância. Esta pesquisa, de cunho quantitativo, apresenta um mapeamento realizado no Instituto Federal do Espírito Santo com o objetivo de conhecer a realidade dos alunos em termos de inclusão digital para tomada de decisões. Os resultados apontam soluções referentes às questões de vulnerabilidades, além de regulamentação e de formação para garantir a qualidade dos cursos ofertados, mesmo na excepcionalidade em tempos de pandemia.
