Emerald Ash Borer Monitoring and Mitigation
PRESENTER: Lara Salido

ABSTRACT. International Plant Sentinel Network (IPSN) is hoping to host a 1-day workshop focus on the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), Agrilus plannipenis. This workshop aims to gather experts, practitioners, and stakeholders to address the pressing issues surrounding EAB and foster collaboration in combating its spread and impact across the region.

Objectives: The workshop seeks to achieve the following objectives: 1. Share the latest scientific insights and research findings on EAB, including its biology, spread, and impact on ash trees in the European region. 2. Discuss current monitoring techniques and technologies employed across Europe, with presentations from project diagnosticians, EPPO specialist group representatives, project coordinators, and other relevant stakeholders. 3. Explore effective mitigation strategies and initiatives underway in the region, focusing on practical approaches and case studies.

Workshop Structure: • Morning Session – Theoretical Component: o Overview of Emerald Ash Borer: Background, Biology, and Ecology. o Presentations by Project Diagnosticians: Insights into current research and findings. o EPPO Specialist Group Perspective: European efforts and guidelines. o Mitigation Actions: Strategies being investigated and implemented. • Afternoon Session – Practical Component: o Visual Surveys: Techniques and protocols for conducting effective field surveys. o Trap Deployment: Hands-on demonstration of trap types and placement strategies. o Key Mitigation Strategies: Workshops and discussions on implementing best practices.

Support Requested from the Orto Botanico:

As key hosts of the Eurogard Congress, the Orto Botanico di Roma is proposed as the venue for this pivotal one-day workshop and we kindly request if it would be possible to have: • Access to a meeting room suitable for approximately 20 participants, equipped with a projector and screen for presentations. • Access to relevant areas of the garden’s collections, particularly where ash trees are located, to facilitate the demonstration of visual survey techniques and the installation of traps. Hosting this workshop would present a unique occasion for the Orto Botanico di Roma as it would be a perfect opportunity to: • Showcase its Botanical Collections: Highlighting the garden's diverse collections and botanical expertise. • Gain International Visibility: Serving as a prestigious venue for an internationally recognized event, enhancing the garden's reputation. • Collaborate and Network: Facilitating partnerships with leading experts and institutions across Europe.
