En este evento colaborativo la escuela Tarhiata Jimpanhe celebra la cultura P’urhépecha a través de una experiencia vivencial y artística. La programación incluye una ceremonia ancestral, un concierto con sones, abajeños y pirekuas interpretados por la Banda Sinfónica Tarhiata Jimpanhe, y talleres impartidos por niñas de la comunidad. Se presentarán bordados en punto de cruz y se compartirán procesos de la gastronomía tradicional como churipo y corundas. La actividad busca fortalecer el vínculo entre saberes comunitarios y prácticas educativas, destacando el protagonismo de las infancias en la preservación cultural.
In this collaborative event, the Tarhiata Jimpanhe School celebrates P’urhépecha culture through an immersive artistic experience. The program includes an ancestral ceremony, a concert featuring sones, abajeños, and pirekuas performed by the Tarhiata Jimpanhe Symphonic Band, and workshops led by girls from the community. Traditional cross-stitch embroidery will be showcased, and participants will get information about iconic P’urhépecha dishes such as churipo and corundas. This activity aims to strengthen the connection between community knowledge and educational practices, highlighting the central role of children in cultural preservation.

Esta presentación aborda la intersección entre la pobreza urbana, la migración y la exclusión social, con énfasis en los esfuerzos comunitarios para restaurar la dignidad a través del servicio directo y la acción social. A partir de experiencias vividas en la zona vulnerable de La Merced, en la Ciudad de México, los ponentes compartirán aprendizajes derivados de años de trabajo con migrantes, personas en situación de calle, adultos mayores, personas en prostitución y otras poblaciones marginadas.
A través de testimonios personales y reflexiones desde el campo, se abordarán los siguientes temas:
- Contexto social y migratorio en zonas urbanas vulnerables como La Merced, donde convergen el abandono institucional y la desigualdad estructural
- Acciones concretas de asistencia, como distribución de alimentos, apoyo en salud e higiene, y acompañamiento emocional y espiritual
- Desarrollo de habilidades clave para el servicio, incluyendo empatía, resiliencia y liderazgo comunitario
- Impacto del servicio tanto en la vida de las personas atendidas como en la transformación personal de quienes sirven
- Reflexión sobre la dignidad humana, los derechos y la justicia social, desde una perspectiva ética y humanitaria
Esta sesión busca generar una comprensión más profunda de las realidades que enfrentan las poblaciones vulnerables en contextos urbanos, y promover el servicio como una vía hacia la justicia, la equidad y la conexión humana.

Hunger and Human Dignity: Addressing Hunger and Marginalization in Urban Spaces
Presentation Overview
This presentation explores the intersection of urban poverty, migration, and social exclusion, with a focus on community-based efforts to restore dignity through direct service and social action. Drawing from lived experiences in the vulnerable La Merced district of Mexico City, the presenters will share insights gained from years of working with migrants, people experiencing homelessness, older adults, individuals in prostitution, and other marginalized populations.
Through personal testimonies and field reflections, the presentation will address:
- The social and migratory context in urban areas like La Merced, where institutional neglect and structural inequality converge
- Concrete assistance strategies, including food distribution, health and hygiene support, and emotional and spiritual accompaniment
- Development of key service-oriented skills, such as empathy, resilience, and community leadership
- The impact of service on both the lives of those served and the personal transformation of those who serve
- A reflection on human dignity, rights, and social justice, framed through ethical and humanitarian perspectives
This session aims to foster a deeper understanding of the realities faced by vulnerable urban populations and to promote service as a pathway to justice, equity, and human connection.
BILINGUAL WORKSHOP / TALLER BILINGUE
In-service teachers share culturally and linguistically responsive pedagogical strategies and materials.
This panel session highlights the practical knowledge generated by a group of 15 in-service teachers who participated in a year-long professional development (PD) program focused on culturally and linguistically responsive pedagogy (CLRP) (Donley et al., 2023; Wesley-Nero & Donley, 2024; Donley & Stephens, 2025) for multilingual learners (MLs). As educators working across a variety of classroom contexts, including dual language bilingual education and English-mainstream settings, participants will share critical reflections, research-based insights, and classroom narratives that exemplify their development as equity-focused practitioners. Grounded in the conceptual and ontological framing of teacher research as a source of pedagogical knowledge (Cochran-Smith & Lytle, 2015; Rosiek & Gleason, 2017), this panel centers what we refer to as teacher practical knowledge: that is, the reflective judgments, experiential insights, and situated pedagogical reasoning teachers employ in the classroom. Panelists will present examples of how they have aligned instruction with students’ cultural and linguistic identities, disrupted deficit-based ideologies, and engaged in peer and self-observation practices to enhance their responsiveness to MLs.

Esta sesión de panel destaca el conocimiento práctico generado por un grupo de 15 docentes en servicio que participaron en un programa de desarrollo profesional (PD) de un año de duración, enfocado en pedagogía cultural y lingüísticamente responsiva (CLRP) (Donley et al., 2023; Wesley-Nero & Donley, 2024; Donley & Stephens, 2025) para estudiantes multilingües (MLs). Como educadores que trabajan en diversos contextos escolares, incluyendo programas de educación bilingüe de doble inmersión y entornos convencionales en inglés, los participantes compartirán reflexiones críticas, conocimientos basados en la investigación y narrativas de aula que ejemplifican su desarrollo como profesionales enfocados en la equidad.
Basado en el marco conceptual y ontológico de la investigación docente como fuente de conocimiento pedagógico (Cochran-Smith & Lytle, 2015; Rosiek & Gleason, 2017), este panel se centra en lo que denominamos conocimiento práctico docente: es decir, los juicios reflexivos, conocimientos experienciales y razonamientos pedagógicos situados que los docentes emplean en el aula. Learning about the Est'k-Gna (Carrizo/Comecrudo) Tribe in South Texas & Fight against Space X and LNG
Somi Se’k and the Struggle for Indigenous Sovereignty: Juan Mancias and the Esto’k Gna Carrizo/Comecrudo Tribe
In this presentation, Tribal Chairman Juan Mancias shares the ongoing struggle of the Esto’k Gna Carrizo/Comecrudo Tribe to protect Somi Se’k, their ancestral homeland in South Texas. Mancias will address the political, legal, and spiritual dimensions of resisting fossil fuel extraction, border wall construction, and the privatization of sacred lands. Drawing from direct action, community organizing, and ancestral teachings, he will highlight how Indigenous sovereignty is undermined by militarized infrastructure and waived environmental protections. Through stories of land reclamation, cultural resilience, and legal advocacy, this session offers a powerful account of Indigenous resistance rooted in dignity, ecological stewardship, and the enduring connection to land and spirit.

En esta presentación, Tribal Chairman Juan Mancias comparte la lucha continua del Pueblo Esto’k Gna Carrizo/Comecrudo para proteger Somi Se’k, su territorio ancestral en el sur de Texas. Mancias abordará las dimensiones políticas, legales y espirituales de la resistencia frente a la extracción de combustibles fósiles, la construcción del muro fronterizo y la privatización de tierras sagradas. A través de acciones directas, organización comunitaria y enseñanzas ancestrales, destacará cómo la soberanía indígena se ve amenazada por infraestructuras militarizadas y la eliminación de protecciones ambientales.
