Scott M. Smith

Professor, Entrepreneur, Philanthropist

 

Scott Smith is the co-founder of Qualtrics, the world leading Experience Management platform. Qualtrics Experience Management (XM) is the process of monitoring every interaction people experience with a company, in order to spot opportunities for improvement​ for customers, employees, products and brands.    In January 2019, Qualtrics was sold to SAP for $8 Billion, in what was the largest private enterprise software acquisition in tech history. Scott is professor emeritus at Brigham Young University’s Marriott School of Management in the Department of Marketing.  His research passions are methods of online data collection, and the measurement and analysis of data.

He is a Fulbright Scholar (Moldova), a consultant, has taught executive courses for leading corporations, and is a qualified expert witness in marketing, Internet commerce and consumer behavior, with his testimony having been reviewed by the U.S. Supreme Court.

He is the author of more than 100 refereed publications, many appearing in the top journals in his field.  His books include the three volume series Basic Marketing Research (2012), Introduction to Marketing Research (2011), Fundamentals of Marketing Research (2005), and Multidimensional Scaling: Concepts and Applications (1989). He is also the author of several statistical software packages.

He has lectured at universities throughout the world.

His earned Ph.D. is from The Pennsylvania State University in marketing with minors in quantitative methods and social-psychology. He also holds an MBA from Michigan State University and a B.S. in marketing from Brigham Young University.

Scott and his wife Karen served in the BYU Jerusalem Center, where they were coordinated humanitarian services in Israel and the West Bank - Occupied Palestinian Territory. They have also been engaged as service missionaries in Hong Kong.  Scott and Karen are cancer survivors and with Karen, their philanthropic priorities are education and cancer research.
