![]() Title:How Docker containers can make chip development more productive Conference:DVCon Europe 2025 Tags:checkpointing, containers, Docker, front-end development and productivity Abstract: Chip design is, in a way, the art of managing complexity. Much of this complexity is handled by the tools employed during the design process, which in itself need to be combined and configured properly. Docker (OCI) containers can help deal with this complexity by bundling all dependencies and configuration together in a shareable form. We show two use cases where containerization makes chip development more productive: chip development on a local machine with VS Code Dev Containers, and container checkpointing as a way to skip redundant computation in functional verification. Based on a user survey and telemetry data, we show that developers enjoy the productivity wins from the Dev Container environment.
