Stopping place prediction at commercial stops of urban public transport

EasyChair Preprint no. 2363

15 pagesDate: January 10, 2020

Abstract

Platforms having several positions for (un)loading passengers are commonly used to increase track capacity of public transport. However, in case of several vehicles approaching the platform from different directions simultaneously, passengers can hardly anticipate the actual stopping place in advance. As a result, passenger movements concentrate to the moment, when the public transport vehicle is stopping at the platform.

This paper presents an approach to predict the stopping places of public transport vehicles to increase passenger safety, convenience and quality of operation. Within microscopic online modeling the algorithms consider stochastic and operational parameters as well as infrastructure components. Finally, a case study is given for the busiest commercial stop of Leipzig, Germany.
