Research on Integrating VR Technology with POE Inquiry Teaching -Examples from a Study of the Elementary School Fifth Grade Using the Unit of "Observing the Sun"

Abstract

This research is a quasi-experimental design study. It was conducted in order to investigate the learning performances and attitudes of elementary school students in grade five towards observing the sun by implementing three different methods: AV/VR-integrated POE teaching, tablet-integrated POE teaching and traditional teaching.

The results of this study found the following. 1. There was a significant difference between learning performances of experimental group A and the control group. 2. There was a significant difference between learning performances of experimental groups A and B. 3. There was a significant difference between pretest and posttest performances of experimental groups A and B.

4.The nonparametric method of posttest for experimental group A and the control group showed that there was no significant difference between understanding and analyzing testing items, while there was a significant difference between memorizing (p=.000<.05) and applying test items(p=.05<.05).

5. The nonparametric method of posttest for experimental group B and the control group showed that there was no significant difference between memorizing, understanding and applying testing items, while there was a significant difference between analyzing test items(p=.02<.05).

In addition, the learning attitude data of experimental groups A and B showed that most students like to use VR or tablets to support POE Inquiry-based teaching method. This teaching method provides students with more opportunities to study independently and participate in group discussions, promoting spontaneous learning.
