Abstract

Climate change and seaports are closely related, as both have significant impacts on each other, thus this research emphasize on identifying the factors from seaport contributing to climate change; the effects of climate change; and the methods for mitigating those effects. This objective is relevant in closing the gap between factors, impacts and strategies in evicting climate change. Seaports are severely affected by extreme weather events brought on by climate change, which can cause disruptions and significant financial losses. In addition, seaports and related activities exacerbate these weather-related events. Conversely, sea trade has grown dramatically on a worldwide scale and is expected to further increase in near future. This calls for the effectiveness of adaptation and mitigations on tackling the climate change. Ship-related greenhouse gas emissions are considered a significant contributor to climate change, as determined by the five main theme on seaport factors. Increased global trade in the near future and a heavy reliance on fossil fuels will exacerbate climate change. While grey infrastructures, like breakwaters, groynes, rock revetments, and others, could serve as temporary solutions to ensure safe navigation and safeguard the seaport face, investments in more modern technologies, green energy, alternative fuel, and the Internet of Things (IoT) could act as mitigators. Given that CC is becoming more frequent and intense in all its forms, mitigation offers a long-term solution while adaptation offers a short-term solution.
