Abstract

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) technology is the main candidate for 5G-beyond. However, the increased number of passive components within the structure increases the number of links to be estimated. As a re-sult, existing RIS-assisted channel estimation schemes are more error-prone than traditional communications, thus confounding a very large pilot load. Many approaches have been used to overcome this obstacle. This paper re-views different options studied ranging from RIS configuration optimiza-tion, channel feature exploitation, deep learning to blind estimation types with the assistance of adaptive mMIMO smart antennas.

Keyphrases: Pilots overhead, channel estimation for reconfigurable intelligent surface, deep learning, reconfigurable intelligent surface
