Abstract

The waste heat recovery (WHR) technology supplied by the organic Rankine cycle (ORC) presents the capacity of producing electric energy from waste heat sources obtained in the cement production process without consuming any additional fuel for this. Moreover, regenerative components can be applied to the ORC in order to increase the cycle’s performance. However, this might impact its installation and operational cost. This paper aims to investigate the thermodynamic effectiveness of a regenerative ORC working under subcritical and subcritical with superheating operating conditions. Additionally, a methodology for working fluid selection based on fluids’ safety and environmental aspects, thermodynamic characteristics and slope of saturated vapour curves is proposed. Also, an economic assessment for the regenerative ORC with the outstanding performed fluids was carried out. The cycle was designed and optimized using the Genetic Algorithm (GA) method in the Engineering Equation Solver (EES) software. According to the results, the regenerative ORC working under subcritical with superheating operating condition generated, in average, more net power output (2.06%) and it was more efficient from the perspective of the first (3.42%) and second (3.22%) laws of thermodynamics for all the selected working fluids compared to the subcritical condition. In addition, the isentropic fluid R141b presented the largest effectiveness under subcritical condition, whereas another isentropic fluid, R11, reached the best results on subcritical with superheating ORC. From the economical perspective, both specific investment and specific generation cost were, in average, inferior in the subcritical with superheating operating condition compared to the subcritical one in 3.12% and 1.31%, respectively.
