Enhancing Consistency in Sensible Mixed Reality Systems: a Calibration Approach Integrating Haptic and Tracking Systems

Abstract

Mixed Reality predominantly blends digital and physical spaces through visual feedback. Although users can observe digital objects overlaid in the physical environment, integrating kinesthetic and proprioceptive sensory modalities needs to be improved, particularly during the spatial manipulation of digital objects. In this context, our research aims to address and enhance this integration for a more seamless and practical mixed-reality experience.

The current challenge lies in seamlessly integrating the tangibility of close-range interactions within the physical world into existing Mixed Reality interfaces. Incorporating the tangible aspects of physical interactions into the Mixed Reality framework poses a unique set of challenges, necessitating an enhanced focus on the integration of haptic and tracking systems. The research addresses this challenge by developing a novel approach incorporating close-range tangibility within Mixed Reality interfaces. By bridging the gap between the digital and physical realms through haptic and accurate tracking, we aim to create an immersive and responsive environment that allows users to interact with digital content in a manner that mirrors real-world interactions.

The achievement of such accuracy in MR environments necessitates precise calibration, especially when utilizing multiple systems. We employ the automatic calculation of transformation matrices method, determining a homogeneous transformation matrix between two systems by leveraging matched position measurements of objects. This method establishes itself as an ideal solution for seamless and efficient MR calibration, contributing to the advancement of precise and immersive mixed-reality experiences.
