Abstract

Disposing off the non-biodegradable material (Scrap Tyre Rubber Specially) has been the bone of contention for the municipalities around the world. Not only the land that it covers is the major issue but the environment is always at risk with such type of dump. In order to deal with this situation and to effectively use the scrap tyre rubber before it catches fire and impacts the environment severely, the idea to use such scrap with the concrete came in my mind and became the part of my final year degree dissertation. Prof. Dr Mehmood Memon from Quide Awam University of Engineering Science & Technology Pakistan was my supervisor who guided me in conducting the study. Four batches of the concrete were designed to be tested in the laboratory with the first batch as plain concrete with no scrap tyre rubber, 10%, 20% and 30% addition of scrap tyre rubber by weight of cement. Cube crushing strength, cylinder crushing strength, Modulus of Elasticity, Poisson's ratio and Flexural stress were tested. With the increase of scrap tyre rubber in the concrete, each property proved to be drastically improving. Due to the limited time this study was limited to the properties as mentioned above. Further studies can be conducted to check Flexural behavior in terms of load displacement history, Shear strength of beams and behavior of concrete in extreme temperatures. This study was first brought to public on Emerging Engineers Awards 2019 organised by ICE Qatar Committee and received first runner up prize.
