Visible Light Induced Hydrogen Evolution on 5%Copper Oxide Deposited on Zinc Oxide Synthesized by the Hydrothermal Method

Abstract

The production of hydrogen is one of the current major stakes in the industry because of the growing importance of this gas in the energetic field. So the appeal to the hydrogen as clean energy vector is one of the solutions to answer the current energy challenges. Thus the use of hydrogen as a clean energy carrier is one of the solutions to today's energy challenges. More energetic than oil and natural gas, non-polluting, non-toxic, the hydrogen could gradually supply the fossil energies and answer the main part of our energy needs [1-2]. To produce this fuel, the electrolysis of water is one of the sectors "green" the most promising. For that purpose, the electrolysis is currently a subject of numerous developments contrary to those of the reforming, the hydrogen is produced from the water [3]. However, these processes remain relatively expensive. In the present work, we are interested in the production of hydrogen on heterojonction CuO/ZnO by photo-catalysis. CuO and ZnO are advantageous because of their abundance, moderate cost, non-toxicity, chemical stability and photo-electrochemical properties. CuO and ZnO were precipitate in basic medium (pH ~ 10) from copper and zinc nitrate. We have synthesized solids by hydrothermal route. The solid obtained was calcined at low temperature (370°C). It was characterized by X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy and UV-Vis spectroscopy solid. The capacitance characteristic (C-2-V) indicates n-type conductivity with a cathodic conduction band, permitting hydrogen formation under visible light. The production of hydrogen gave satisfactory results with a rate evolution of 15.6 µmol g-1 mn-1 was obtained in presence SO32- of as hole scavenger.
