Ukraine’s URIS system and the Slovak national CRIS provide two distinct but complementary examples of how large-scale infrastructures can manage hundreds of thousands of research records while maintaining high standards of accuracy, transparency, and interoperability. In Ukraine, more than half a million submissions undergo a combined manual and automated validation process coordinated by the State Scientific and Technical Library of Ukraine, forming the backbone of national research assessment and reporting. Slovakia, meanwhile, has developed its own frameworks for quality control and verification, embedded in long-standing national evaluation practices and supported by established governance structures.Examining these systems side by side offers an opportunity to understand not only their technical components, but also the governance models that define who is responsible for data curation, how competencies are distributed, and which mechanisms ensure accountability. By bringing these elements together data quality practices, validation workflows, governance arrangements, and the responsible use of metrics this study aims to provide insights of practical value to the broader CRIS community. Understanding how national systems operate in different contexts can help inform the design of infrastructures that are robust, scalable, and aligned with FAIR and Open Science principles.
