European Infrastructure Integration and Research Knowledge Graphs

9 pages•Published: October 19, 2026

Abstract

European research infrastructures increasingly emphasize cross-institutional knowledge graphs, linked open data, and interoperability across national and disciplinary boundaries. This paper highlights gaps in and contributions to the research knowledge graph (RKG) integration in Europe, focusing on the role of institutional knowledge graphs (IRKG) as central hubs in a vertically integrated ecosystem. The findings underscore the need for widespread OpenAIRE compliance and open infrastructure to build a trustworthy, reusable research information commons across Europe, and the role that knowledge-graph-based open-source research information systems like VIVO can play in this.

Keyphrases: cordis, interoperability, knowledge graphs, linked open data (lod), open research information, openaire, openalex, orcid, persistent identifiers (pids), vivo
