![]() Title:Roots: a Bioregenerative Life Support System Design Concept for the Oasis Lunar Base Authors:Fiorella Arias Bonilla Conference:CEC 2026 Tags:Closed-Loop Ecosystems, Resource Recovery and Circularity and Space Agriculture Abstract: Long-duration space habitation will require life-support systems capable of minimizing logistical resupply while maintaining stable environmental conditions and enabling local food production. This paper presents ROOTS (Regenerative Resource Operations for Organics Treatment Sustenance), a bioregenerative life support system (BLiSS) design concept developed as part of the OASIS lunar research base architecture during the University of Stuttgart Space Settlement Design Workshop (SSDW) 2025. ROOTS proposes an integrated biological processing network designed to convert crew metabolic outputs and organic waste streams into valuable resources. The system architecture combines plant growth chambers, microalgae photobioreactors, edible insect bioreactors, fungal cultivation units, and a pilot shrimp aquaculture module, supported by microbial nutrient recovery and waste treatment subsystems. By linking these biological modules through controlled mass and nutrient flows, the system enables the transformation of organic residues into oxygen, reclaimed water, fertilizers, and edible biomass, while generating additional by-products such as chitin-based biomaterials. The concept emphasizes the importance of multi-trophic biological systems capable of integrating diverse resource streams within a single regenerative infrastructure. This work outlines the proposed system architecture, key material and energy flows, and the design rationale behind the selection of biological components. ROOTS demonstrates how integrated BLiSS approaches can enhance resource circularity, operational resilience, and scientific research capacity in future space settlements.
