Abstract:
The outbreak of COVID-19 had led to the government of Malaysia in impos-ing the Movement Control Order (MCO) to limit the spread of the virus. Strict lock down measures resulting people to be isolated from others and re-ly more on social media to communicate or expressing thoughts and emo-tions. The trends and sentiments of popular content posted through social media may provide insight for marketers to promote and design their social media posts. This research is a content analysis study to identify the image content and caption sentiments reflected during the first MCO from mid-March to June 2020. A total of 200 top posts have been collected on Insta-gram and were filtered with the hashtags “#mco” and “#cmco”. The content of the posts will be categorized into food, gadget, captioned photo, pet, activ-ity, selfie, fashion, landscape, portrait, and video while the sentiments of the posts will be categorized into narrative of fear, fun, sadness, responsibility, and encouragement. The results of this study have shown that portraits and positive narratives are dominant during MCO, and the implication of study are discussed.
