Abstract:
The pandemic of Covid-19 has changed the lifestyle of people nowadays. Students has to adapt to the new norms in which everyone need to rely on the digital mediums to interact with others. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of social media use on the connectedness in terms of level of social connectedness among the university students in Malaysia during this pandemic of Covid-19. It also aims to identify whether there is significant relationship between the purposes of social media use (i.e., academic, socialization, entertainment and informativeness) and the level of social connectedness in social relationship. The gender differences between social media use and social connectedness also been tested. A set of questionnaires that consisted three sections: demographic profile, online social networking usage questionnaire and social connectedness were distributed through snowball sampling method via the online platforms. There were 300 respondents were recruited in this study with the mean age (M = 22.26). The collected data was analysed using descriptive test, Pearson correlation test and independent t-test using IBM SPSS Statistics Version 27.0. The results indicates that there was no significant relationship between social media usage time and social connectedness. However, there was significant relationship between the purposes of social media usage such as the purpose for academic, entertainment, socialization and informativeness with social connectedness. On the other hand, there were no differences between females and males on social media use and social connectedness on the online setting. In conclusion, this study highlights that the use of social media with purposes such as education, socialization, entertainment, and obtaining information would enhance the social relationship with a higher level of social connectedness.
