![]() Title:Scanning Electron Microscopy of the Tongue in the Gecko Cyrtopodion Scabrum (HEYDEN, 1827) Conference:TMREES26Lb Tags:Cyrtopodion scabrum, Morphology, SEM and Tongue Abstract: Cyrtopodion scabrum, or rough-scaled gecko, is a small gecko of the family Gekkonidae distributed in West Asia. This study aimed to characterize the dorsal lingual surface of C. scabrum using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Fifteen adult specimens were collected from different areas of Baghdad, Iraq. Their tongues were removed and examined by SEM to investigate tongue morphology, lingual papillae, microridges, and glandular openings. The tongue consisted of three regions: apex, body, and root, with the entire dorsal surface covered by lingual papillae. Papillae were mushroom-shaped at the apex, leaf-shaped on the body, and broad and wing-shaped at the root. Imbricated papillae resembling fish scales were observed at the apex and lateral root. Numerous micropores in the root papillae suggest that this region may represent the main site of lingual gland secretion.
