The latest milestone for leading manufacturers is to offer third-party verified carbon-neutral products, which involves extensive emission reductions in the manufacturing process, obtaining certified carbon offsets that have measurable impacts, and having the process successfully audited by a reputable independent organization. Verification involves challenges such as accurately calculating Scope 1 and Scope 3 emissions under the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and procuring sufficient carbon credits. These difficulties can limit the number of manufacturers seeking verification. This case study aims to evaluate the drivers and barriers to achieving carbon-neutral product verification. Product manufacturers who are either pursuing or have attained third-party verification will be assessed to determine (i) the regulations and industry movements that are affecting the timeframes for achieving carbon-neutral products, (ii) the processes and tools used to quantify supply chain emissions, and (iii) the challenges of maintaining a third-party verification across multiple product lines. The findings from this study will offer a comparative analysis of the progress made by building product manufacturers in their quest for carbon neutrality. Furthermore, the study will provide strategic recommendations to enhance participation in decarbonization endeavors within the construction industry.
