![]() Title:Analysis of the Space Biomedical Potential for the Advancement of Sustainable Biotechnology Using Microalgae Nannochloropsis Oculata Conference:CEC 2024 Tags:Biotecnología sostenible, Medicina espacial, Microalgas and Nannochloropsis oculata Abstract: The Universidad del Valle de Guatemala, specifically the Department of Chemical Engineering and Industrial Biotechnology, with the objective of promoting research on issues related to the foreseeable development of the country, has implemented microalgae as a key tool for the development of viable solutions to problems present in Guatemala, as well as contributing to the innovation of space research in the country. Microalgae transcended their role as nutritional sources to become protagonists in the development of medical treatments. Their capacity for accelerated growth and accumulation of biomass rich in beneficial compounds make them ideal candidates for the sustainable production of medicines, providing various solutions in the field of human health. The objective of this research is to explore the biomedical potential of the microalgae species Nannochloropsis oculata in the field of space medicine. The research focuses on its therapeutic applications, from the production of antioxidants for protection against oxidative stress induced by space radiation, to its use in the prevention of chronic diseases to maintain the health of astronauts during prolonged missions. Likewise, their ability to accelerate wound healing through photosynthetic sutures is being analyzed. These advances can not only improve medical care in space; they can also have beneficial applications on Earth, promoting a sustainable approach to medicine and pharmaceutical production. Although the clinical phase to comparatively evaluate the safety and efficacy of treatments derived from microalgae has not yet been reached, research in this field is desired to open a panorama towards a future where sustainable biotechnology is part of space medicine with the aim of improving the health and well-being of astronauts during their missions and at the same time can contribute to the sustainable advancement of the world.
