Although NoSQL databases have been explored to improve horizontal scalability, prior approaches typically separate metadata indexing from binary object storage, relying on distinct technologies and persistence models. Chunking mechanisms have also been used to handle large medical imaging objects, but mostly as technical workarounds rather than architectural design parameters. In contrast, this work proposes a unified, chunk-aware distributed persistence architecture where both DICOM metadata and image objects are managed within the same NoSQL infrastructure, and assesses its retrieval under realistic WAN conditions.
