Abstract:
In contrast to a wealth of research proving education level or skill mismatch in labor market outcomes, less emphasis has been dedicated to field-of-study mismatch and its consequences. This study aimed to answer the following research questions: Are workers' wage penalties linked to field-of-study mismatches? If so, what kind of workplace learning is effective in mitigating this effect? We investigated evidence from the manufacturing sector, which has been struggling with a labor mismatch, high turnover rates, and job vacancies. Our study, using the Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), contributes to our existing understanding of how to mitigate the wage penalties caused by the field-of-study mismatch.
