In Guatemala, science outreach plays a fundamental role in motivating new generations to pursue careers in STEM fields, especially given the limited access to hands-on technological experiences in many educational centers. In this context, projects from the Engineering Faculty at Universidad del Valle de Guatemala have generated opportunities to bring science and engineering closer to school students.

The QUETZAL-2 project began in 2024, focusing on developing the second Guatemalan satellite to be placed into orbit. One of the project's scientific objectives is to incorporate an educational component to bring the space sector closer to Guatemalan educational communities. The participation of schools in the mission is facilitated by deploying low-cost antennas that receive data packets transmitted by the satellite over the LoRa protocol. To achieve this, the QUETZAL-2 team develops workshops for teachers and students that cover general concepts in satellites and related technologies.

During the first four months of implementation in 2026, outreach activities reached approximately 1,700 participants across 15 educational centers. Based on the experience gained during these activities, it has been observed that practical, hands-on approaches foster student interest and participation in scientific and technological topics. In future, surveys can be implemented to measure the impact of these types of activities compared to theorical lectures.

This work presents the outreach strategies implemented by the QUETZAL-2 team, the educational resources developed, and the reach achieved during its initial phase, highlighting the potential of such initiatives to strengthen technological education in Guatemala and to connect university research with future generations of scientists and engineers.
