Popular measurement technologies include guided radar, ultrasonic, capacities and flotation based sensors principles. In this work, the system of interest is a coffee machine that is being outfitted with an industrial robotic arm. It is of interest to estimate the level of coffee beans remaining in the coffee machine tank, which can be inspected through a transparent window in the machine. The facility for visual inspection, together with the obvious need to ensure safe human consumption of the produced coffee, makes the use of vision based sensor technology particularly interesting. The goal of the project is to compare modern machine learning methods against traditional image processing techniques, for the purpose of estimating the level of coffee beans in a transparent tank fitted to a coffee machine. Measurements using both approaches is to be compared against manual level measurements.
