09:00-10:00 Session 6

Keynote 2: Prof. Félix Francés, Professor of Hydrology at UPV Researcher at IIAMA President of PTEA Keynote Title: "Advanced flood hazard and risk estimation: application to the Poyo wadi (Valencia, Spain)"

The floods of October 29, 2024, in Valencia (Spain) were a disaster of great magnitude. The extraordinary recorded precipitation reached 772 mm in a 24-hour period. But it was predicted some years earlier. The hazard assessment was conducted using a storm generator, a distributed hydrological model, and a 2D hydraulic model to better capture spatiotemporal variability compared to traditional methods. The peak flow from the 2024 event can be estimated to have a return period of 1,000 to 5,000 years. Finally, the risk estimation integrated specific vulnerability curves for each land use, revealing annual direct losses of 30 million euros.
