Bio

Dr. Mustafa Demir is currently an assistant research scientist in Human Systems Engineering at the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University. His background in human-computer interaction, quantitative research methods and design of experiments, human-autonomy teaming, team cognition, and nonlinear dynamical systems (NDS) methods. Dr. Demir received his Ph.D. in Simulation, Modelling, and Applied Cognitive Science, focusing on team coordination dynamics and team effectiveness in human-autonomy teaming from Arizona State University in Spring 2017. Last ten years, his research is grounded in a human-systems engineering approach, and he seeks to optimize sociotechnical systems by understanding and developing more effective human-centered collaborative systems. In general, his research is motivated by a desire to gain a deeper understanding of sociotechnical settings, which consists of: human-autonomy teams’ behavioral, cognitive, and intentional processes in terms of the interaction of individuals (either human or autonomous agents) with each other, different levels of technology, and their dynamic task environment. With that motivation, he has discovered how interactions among the team members (at physiological and behavioral level), and team members’ interactions between the technology and their task environment drive thought and action so that we may further the human capacity to think effectively and behave adaptively in our unpredictable world. His research has been published in peer-reviewed venues over 60 times. Some of the main venues he reviews and published are IEEE Transitions on Human-Machine Systems, Human Factors, Ergonomics, Human-Computer Studies, and Human-Computer Interaction. Dr. Demir is also a Human Factors and Ergonomics Society member and serves as a co-chair of its Societal Impact Committee. Dr. Demir was a recipient of the IEEE Communications Society Best Paper Award in 2016.
