Liuzhou has a history of more than 2,100 years. The city was founded in 111 B.C. when it was known as Tanzhong(潭中, "Center of Deep Pool"). In 742 A.D. it became known as Longcheng (龙城, "Dragon City"), after the Long River, before finally changing to Liuzhou (柳州,"Willow Prefecture") after the Liu River in 1736. The most famous historic figure is Liu Zongyuan (773-819), who was a poet and politician in the Tang Dynasty and who died in Liuzhou. Liuhou Park is in the center of Liuzhou city, to commemorate Zongyuan Liu, who was Tang Dynasty writer and former governor of Liuzhou. It was built in Qing Dynasty Xuantong (1909). Now, liuhou park is the only one national park in Guangxi. The main attractions in the park include: Liuhou temple, Luochi, Citrus Pavilion, and so on. Zongyuan Liu culture as the main line of traditional culture and the beautiful natural landscape combines to form the unique city garden. The Liuhou park not only has the garden leisure function, but also mass text break activities, historical, traditional culture and other aspects of social education function.

Baili Liu River is a landmark of Liuzhou. The river around the City about 74 kilometers. It looks like as a green jade belt winding dragon. Both sides of the river, Castle Peak stands. The river bed is covered with pebbles and sand. The river water is as clear as Lijiang River, but deeper and wider than the Lijiang River. Step three back, it like a quit home married bride, reluctantly leaving. In Liuzhou, most of the landscape is related to the Liu River, that make the human landscape is in harmony with the natural landscape. Take a cruise ship or ride along the river. Minority villages are also one of the characteristics of Liuzhou. As with much of Guangxi, the landscape around Liuzhou is a mix of rolling hills, mountain peaks, caves and karst scenery. It is an ideal base for exploring the minority villages in the area.
Rongshui Miao Autonomous County is located in the north of Liuzhou prefecture, 118 km away from Liuzhou and 168 km from Guilin. The territory is inhabited by Miao, Yao, Dong, Zhuang, Han nationality.
Dayaoshan Scenic Area is in Jinxiu Yao Autonomous County, 154 km from the city of Liuzhou. It has a scenic area of over 500 sq.km.
Sanjiang lies to the north of Liuzhou near the Hunan border. It is a Dong minority area and is surrounded by picturesque ethnic minority villages.
