Tips and Tricks for Getting Published as an Early Career Researchers
By Joseph Pold (Editor, Public Library of Science)
Bringing 10 years of experience from across the publishing industry, Joe will discuss some of the common pain points and hiccups early career researchers run into as they look to build a publication record. This session will cover the importance and components of a good cover letter, how to encourage reviewers to look at your paper in an increasingly crowded environment, and other practical advice for authors. Joe will also share insights into the scholarly communications landscape, such as setting expectations for peer review turnaround times, and will welcome questions from the audience as he seeks to shed light on a historically opaque relationship between scientists and publishers.
Discussion: Current Issues at the Intersection of US Science and Human Rights
Moderated by Andrea Liu (Hepburn Professor of Physics, University of Pennsylvania)
Andrea Liu will moderate a discussion on “Current issues at the intersection of US science and human rights.” She is the vice-chair of the Committee for Human Rights of the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine, so she has a strong interest in these topics, but will be moderating this in her personal capacity. Everyone attending the conference is invited to attend and participate. Many of us are concerned about human rights issues but don’t feel qualified to talk about it since we are not experts the way we are experts in our scientific fields. However, we are all human and issues at the intersection of science and human rights are affecting us and our research more and more. This is an opportunity to meet as a community to discuss such issues.
