An efficient approach to multi-objective routing in a large-scale LoRa network based on hierarchical clustering

Abstract

With the permanent growth of Internet of Things, a new category of network has emerged: LPWAN (Low Power Wide Area Network). There are several LPWAN technologies, but LoRa is the most well known. LoRaWAN communication protocol only allows one-hop communications between LoRa nodes and gateways that redirect information to the server. However, in order to reach all gateways within its transmission radius, nodes can change their settings; which leads to energy losses, low data throughput or low bandwidth. We are interested here in building a multi-objective communications system using objects with the LoRa module. This is to allow a process of multi-hop routing of information to the server. The used technique then increase the network life time thanks to the optimization of the LoRa parameters used during transmissions (SF, BW, CR). Thus, our approach  is based on the LoRaWAN protocol and a multi-hop clustering technique in order to achieve several objectives: minimizing the overall energy consumption of the network, collecting data in the networks large-scale, and intelligent selection of communication gateway for routing to the server.
