"Establish a Community Gardens District" : Community Gardens and urban imaginary

EasyChair Preprint no. 817

Abstract

Using the example of the Lower East Side Gardens, the contribution reflects on the role of the gardens today in order to think and practice differently the city. At first, an historical part recalls the role of the garden in urban policies and more specifically in New York. A second phase focuses on the garden as a critical space, as illustrated by the political history of the community gardens in Lower East Side. Finally, the question is to what extent this practice constitutes an alternative thought of the city. A work in progress that the debate at the ICHT symposium would enrich.

Keyphrases: commons, community gardens, communs, Imaginaire urbain, jardins partagés, Urban Imaginary
