Abstract

This paper aims to identify the effect of water content, curing time and binder content on the mechanical properties of a soft soil chemically stabilised. The soil under study is a Portuguese soft soil collected in Baixo Mondego area and the binder selected to its stabilisation is an Ordinary Portland Cement. In the experimental study the water content varies from 100 to 120%, the binder content ranges from 5% to 15% (expressed as the ratio of the binder dry weight to soil dry weight), and the samples were tested at 7 and 28 days of curing time. The results showed that the unconfined compressive strength increases with the binder content due to the higher level of cementation but decreases as the water content increases reflecting the lower density and the higher void ratio of the composite material. The results also showed that the strength and the stiffness increase with the curing time due to the development with time of the physico-chemical reactions allowing the construction of a stronger and stiffer matrix.

Keyphrases: Binder content, curing time, soft soils
