Academic Motivation and Causal Styles in Students

Abstract

The present investigation aims to describe the academic motivation and causal styles of the students of 1^st year of baccalaureate of the Municipal Educational Unit “Eugenio Espejo”, A quantitative approach was used, with a research’s descriptive level, the research is of documentary and field type, with a socio-educational modality. For the data collection, CEAP-48 scale Manual, academic motivation Scale and causal styles were used, which evaluates the academic motivation and causal styles. The studied population was a total of 184 students. The conclusions were the following: most of the students of first year of baccalaureate of the Municipal Educational Unit “Eugenio Espejo” have a superficial/fear motivation of failure, as their academic achievements are stimulated by the environment’s incentives and consequences. This is, that the teachers, classmates and parents intervene in the students’ academic achievement. The students have as goals or objectives to obtain good grades, as they are aware that good grades will help them to be projected to a better future. When the students get low grades, they may feel bad. The causal style that most of the students have, are the external causal, it is, that the students think that their academic results do not depend only on their study’s capacity, but on other people like their teachers, classmates, family, etc. It was also observed that the students are always concerned about their academic performance.
