Abstract

The admission of students in the engineering degrees in Geology, Mines, Petroleum and Environmental in the previous decade was carried out under the responsibility of the respective Faculty of the Central University of Ecuador. A decade later, and by a legal provision, are carried out by bodies external to the Academy, in the case of the country, the responsibility falls on the National Secretariat for Higher Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation with the project of the National Leveling and Admission System and supported by the National Institute of Educational Evaluation. At both moments knowledge tests were applied, in the first case, the tests were for entrance into the subjects of mathematics, physics, and chemistry, in the second case the same tests were diagnostic. The results show a considerable drop in the reports and the possible causes of this problem are described and are summarized in the change in the type of high school offered by the schools governed by the Ministry of Education. The little experience of the organizations that carry out the admission process due to their incipient link to the academy, the standardization of the admission test for all applicants to any career in public universities, changes in the training of high school graduates in a way that causes formations with deficiencies that did not exist before
