A Decision-Support Tool for the Management of Cogeneration Plants Participating in the Day-Ahead Electricity Market

EasyChair Preprint no. 2506

2 pagesDate: January 30, 2020

Abstract

Simultaneously producing electricity and utilities (steam, hot water) from the same primary energy, cogeneration plants represent today an interesting solution to improve the overall energy efficiency of industrial sites, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions (from 10 to 30% of CO2 emissions avoided depending on the system). Moreover, following the liberalisation of the energy market, they have also become an important source of profit, which has made the management of these installations more complex. Indeed, like trading mechanisms, the energy market is highly fluctuating, forcing production units to be increasingly flexible and reactive. Consequently, the management of these facilities plays a key role in taking advantage of these opportunities. In this context, the LGC, in collaboration with the company Proesis, is developing a management support software called PlanEner dedicated to the management of cogeneration installations in this market context. In order to exploit the various contracts (intraday, day-ahead, deletion, etc.), this management system is hierarchised into three interconnected decision levels: medium-term planning, short-term planning (the only level addressed in this communication) and real-time control.
