EasyChair Preprint no. 4237

19 pagesDate: September 22, 2020

Abstract

WorldSkills competition honors young labor force for their peak vocational skills. With a long history of over 90 years, WorldSkills competition attracts nearly 90 countries or territories to compete. Like Experts and Competitors, Interpreters must qualify top-notch skills. Taking responsibilities for written and oral language translation, Interpreters allow Experts to work together without communication difficulties and ensure all Competitors to get the same information to compete on equal footing. This exploratory study focuses on discovering job satisfaction towards Interpreters from the perspectives of Experts and Competitors who finished their WorldSkills Competition by using Likert scale questions and semi-structured interviews. It is revealed that most Experts and Competitors are satisfied with the Interpreters’ work before and during the competitions. However, Competitors expect Interpreters to improve their mastery of technical terms and have more contact time working with Competitors while Experts suggest that Interpreters should be trained more professionally with a long-term strategy.
