U-SPACE Workshop 2027 will bring together researchers and practitioners working on the systems, methods, and operational arrangements needed for UAVs to share urban airspace safely.
The workshop is intended for an academic and technical audience. We are interested in results that are explicit about assumptions, evidence, uncertainty and limits, and that help explain how a research result might be used in an actual operation.
Particular attention will be given to work relevant to SESAR and the Digital European Sky, UKRI-supported research and innovation, and Horizon Europe projects. This includes work on dependable computing, autonomy, communications, cybersecurity, U-space services, human factors, environmental impact and public health.
We also welcome critical work. Urban UAVs may provide useful services, but their introduction can create noise, pollution, ecological disturbance, safety risks, intrusive observation and unequal effects. Technical proposals should take these issues seriously and should not assume that more data or more automation is necessarily better.
Submission Guidelines
All papers must be original and not simultaneously submitted to another journal or conference. The following paper categories are welcome.
- Regular papers (up to 10 pages, excluding references), presenting original research on theories, techniques, systems, and tools for designing, validating, operating, and evaluating dependable, secure, and resilient systems for urban air mobility, U-space, and related domains.
- Practical experience reports (up to 10 pages, excluding references), describing the application of methods, tools, and techniques in real-world or challenging operational settings, including lessons learned, deployment experiences, and implementation challenges.
- Industry papers (up to 10 pages, excluding references), addressing industrial use cases, practical applicability, scalability, emerging technological challenges, and the deployment of U-space and urban air mobility systems, with an emphasis on practical insights and industrial relevance.
- Short papers (up to 6 pages, including references), presenting preliminary research, position papers, emerging ideas, or descriptions of tools, prototypes, and operational system designs.
List of Topics
- Dependable autonomous systems and safety assurance
- Uncertainty quantification and the propagation of uncertainty through U-space systems
- U-space services, UTM, C2, telemetry and interoperability
- GNSS resilience, navigation, communications and cybersecurity
- Fleet operations, traffic management and beyond-visual-line-of-sight operations
- Verification, validation, testing, digital twins and operational evidence
- Human factors, remote piloting, human oversight and work organization
- Noise, emissions, energy, biodiversity, air quality and climate resilience
- Public health, occupational safety, accessibility and inclusive service design
- Privacy-preserving sensing, data minimization and civil-liberties protections
- Ethical governance, accountability, transparency, redress and dual-use risk
- Policy, regulation, standards, procurement and routes to adoption
Publication
Authors of accepted papers may opt to have their contributions considered for publication in the Springer companion proceedings of EDCC 2027, subject to the applicable publication requirements. Springer generally prefers papers of at least 12 pages in total. Authors submitting regular papers, practical experience reports, or industry papers who wish to pursue this option should therefore aim for at least 10 pages of main content, plus references. Short papers may be less suitable for inclusion in the proceedings because of their 6-page limit, including references.
