13th Symposium on Ubiquitous Music (UbiMus 2023)
2-4 November 2023, Ulster University, Derry~Londonderry campus, Northern Ireland (UK)
Ubiquitous Music is an interdisciplinary research area that combines methodologies from music, computer science, education, creativity studies, human sciences and engineering. The Thirteenth Workshop/Symposium on Ubiquitous Music will be held on 2-4 November at Ulster University, Derry, Northern Ireland (UK) in hybrid format (mostly on-site, but with an online strand).
Researchers working on ubiquitous music topics are invited to submit proposals, initial results and complete research projects. The workshop will adopt English (on-site conference, workshop and music strands) and Portuguese, Spanish and English (online) as working languages.
The city of Derry/Londonderry has a strong tradition of engaging with issues of social justice, both nationally and globally, having been at the centre of the Northern Ireland Civil Rights movement in the 1960s and 1970s. As such, we would particularly welcome topics which relate to issues related to inclusion and equality of access within ubiquitous music and audio-based creativity.
We will have both on-site and online strands, and will strive to ensure access to the event is not limited by delegates’ ability to pay, though discounted rates related to conditions in their current location and/or situation (including delegates who are independent scholars and/or artists or technologists), and, where appropriate, through fee waivers.
Further details about the conference, including travel and scheduel information, is available via the Ulster University Ubimus2023 conference webpage.

Submission Guidelines
All papers must be original and not simultaneously submitted to another journal or conference. The following paper categories are welcome:
Papers, Demonstrations/Workshops and Music.
All submissions must take place via the EasyChair site, by our extended deadline of 26th April, 2023 (23:59 within your particular timezone) - NOTE NEW DEADLINE.
New Category - Work-in-progress Summary - Extended Abstract
Where colleagues wish to submit work which is at a formative stage for discussion and feedback within the community, they may, as an alternative to short papers (4 pages), submit an extended abstract of 1000 words with citations, and an additional reference list (the latter not counted in the word count), adhering to the Ubimus template (see below) and submitted as a PDF. All submissions will be fully peer-reviewed in a double-blind process. Accepted Work-in-Progress abstracts will be published in the symposium proceedings for reference within the wider field, but noted as a separate category from full-text peer-reviewed papers (see category below).
Papers
Please submit your research as full papers or short papers (work-in-progress), with a maximum of 12 and 4 pages, respectively, including references and acknowledgements. Papers may be written in English, Portuguese, or Spanish, and should adhere strictly to the Ubimus template .docx (access via this link) and submitted as a PDF, or as LaTEX, accessible via this link, submitted as a PDF. All submissions will be fully peer-reviewed in a double-blind process. Accepted papers will be published in the symposium proceedings and will be under consideration for ubimus special issues and projects.
Panels
Panels with contributions - up to six (shorter) presentations of 15-minutes each, or three (longer) presentations of 30 mins each, plus plenary panel discussion/Q&A - can be proposed by the Convenor of the panel, with the following materials in a single document.
-
Proposed title and short abstract (300 words) for the panel, including membership details (please include PANEL as prefix before the title).
-
Title and medium-length abstract (500 words) for the individual contributions, with the addition of a reference list where relevant.
-
Brief biographical details for the panel members (c. 100 words).
Panel proposals will be reviewed single-blind.
Please note that the organisers may combine different panel proposals where there is significant alignment or overlap. The organisers may also propose that panel durations be changed, i.e. contributions reduced to shorter presentations, or expanded to longer presentations, based on our assessment of the time available and required.
Demonstrations and Workshops
We welcome applications for 15-minute and 30-minute demonstrations and 1-hour workshops.
Extended abstracts of no more than 2 pages detailing the workshop/demo submission should be written in English and submitted as PDF in Easychair using the Ubimus templates.
Please note that we can provide a projector (HDMI) and stereo audio.
Call for Music
Please submit artistic proposals to be presented in the symposium venue (or partner venues) and in the online programme. Works must feature a strong connection with the workshop topics. Extended abstracts of no more than 2 pages detailing the artistic submission should be written in English, Portuguese or Spanish and submitted as PDF in Easychair using the Ubimus templates.
If using Portuguese or Spanish, please provide an additional summary description in English of c.80-200 words to facilitate the work of the on-site organisers. Sonic materials and artistic media for review should be made available for download through a link to a cloud service. The artistic submissions are not anonymous. Please clearly specify all requirements and setup time for the performance on a detailed technical rider accompanying your submission. Please note that it is the responsibility of artists whose work involves performers to make their own arrangements in this regard. The conference will provide a stereo sound system and may be able to provide a multichannel diffusion system for performances which are solely digital/electronic/computer-based. We may also be in a position to present headphone-based fixed-media works via geolocated listening at sites across the city; if your piece fits such a mode and you are interested in this option, please note it in your application materials.
Please note that, regrettably, we are not in a position to provide artist fees for creators and/or performers, but that artists can be considered for reduced fees or a full fee waiver.
