Islam can offer a unique alternative perspective on environmental ethics that is deeply rooted in the Islamic tradition. Environmental ethics has been represented primarily in the Qur’an and Sunnah as well as commented on the scientific tradition. However, most of the literature on Islam, the environment, and climate change is theoretical and focuses on Islamic environmental ethics.
More and more research is emphasizing the importance of religion in understanding and dealing with climate change. However, little is known about the relationship between the Muslim community and climate change; solutions rooted in the Islamic tradition are rarely offered. Islam is under-represented in such environmental debates, maybe partly due to the lack of interest of Muslims in ecological issues.
Currently, Muslim-majority countries such as Indonesia are trying to protect the environment by developing aspects of environmental sharia. The Indonesian Ulama Council (MUI) has been at the forefront of fighting for environmental issues by issuing fatwas on the environment, including several fatwas related to forest fires in Kalimantan and Sumatra. Several Islamic Organizations have also formed sub-units specifically to raise environmental awareness and promote plastic waste management to green lifestyles. However, it is still unclear to what extent these activities of Indonesian Muslims have resulted in broader changes in the daily activities of Indonesian Muslim communities and organizations? In addition, there is no uniform understanding of climate change among Muslims, including Indonesian Muslims, and it has given rise to different approaches to climate change.
In line with this, the City of Tangerang, which has been trying to represent Islamic values with a vision as a city with “Akhlaqul Kharimah” (good morals), cannot be separated from environmental problems. So, as in this situation, environmental issues in Tangerang must continue to be socialized and campaigned to the public. As part of that, a very strategic needed to take a step to provide comprehensive knowledge to the community to minimize the environmental impact caused by pollution in the city of Tangerang.
Thus, Universitas Muhammadiyah Tangerang tries to provide space for all parties to contribute to creating natural and environmental sustainability, in the form of thoughts, theories, and realms of praxis which are viewed from various perspectives, including the views of Islam contained in the Qur’an and Sunnah, by presenting the 1st Tangerang Islamic International Conference (TIIC) with theme Environmentalism in The Moslem World.
