The organising committee of the annual SociolingsuistEssex Conference invites all final-year Undergraduates, Masters, and PhD students from the University of Essex and beyond to submit abstracts for oral presentations discussing any topic within sociolinguistics and related fields. The call is extended to any students whose work is relevant to sociolinguistics.
The conference is organised by current Postgraduate Research students from the Department of Language and Linguistics.
This year's conference will be held online, Friday 6th August 2021.
Submission Guidelines
This conference accepts sociolinguistics research in any stage including preliminary results, research proposals, or literature reviews.
Prospective presenters are asked to submit abstracts for oral presentations:
- No more than 400 words in length, not including references.
- The deadline for submissions has been extended to 28 June 2021.
- Electronic submissions only, submitted through the link above.
- Abstracts must be sent in .pdf format.
- All submissions should be anonymous (title and abstract text only).
The file name of your anonymous abstract should be in the following format:
- The first three words of the title of your abstract_anon (e.g. SententialWordOrder_anon.pdf).

All papers must be original and not simultaneously submitted to another journal or conference.
Abstract Formatting Guidelines
Your abstract should be no more than 400 words in length, not including references, and submitted in .pdf format.
Please format the page as follows:
- Line spacing: 1.5
- All margins: 2.5cm (1 inch)
- Text alignment: justified
- Title text: Times New Roman, 14pt, bold, centred
- NB: this should include name and affiliation on the named abstract file
- Body text: Times New Roman, 12pt • paragraphs: do not indent; leave one clear line between paragraphs
Acceptance Guidelines
All abstracts will be anonymously reviewed and accepted presentations will be notified by the organising committee. Presenters will be allotted 20 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for discussion.
If your abstract is accepted, you will be asked to send a named abstract that should contain, along with the abstract text itself, the following identifying information:
- Title of the abstract
- Author's name
- Author's affiliation
The file name of your named abstract should be in the following format:
- The first three words of the title of your abstract_name (e.g. SententialWordOrder_name.pdf)
Conference Proceedings
All presenters at SLX24 will be invited to submit to the conference proceedings. Submissions will need to be emailed to: slxconference@essex.ac.uk by 10 September 2021.
