Social Informatics lies at the interface of digital platforms and social communities unlocking the public interest value of big data and data science methods. Its research questions and methods, on top of their foundational value, are key to understanding how to identify needs and target interventions to improve people’s lives, as well as to measure the impact of these interventions.
The proposed workshop aims at both showcasing ongoing research in the emerging field of “data science for development and social good” and at engaging the SocInfo research community in this line of interdisciplinary work. It aims to host new conversations between problem owners, data owners and scholars in Computer Science, Informatics, Social Sciences and Management Sciences.
We invite research contributions focused on (but not limited to) the following broad domains included under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development:
- Humanitarian aid
- Gender gaps
- Public health, access to health, nutrition
- Migrations and internal displacement
- Education and skill gaps
- Unemployment
- Inequality and poverty
- Environment and sustainability
Other topics of interest will include: models interpretability in support of better decision making; data science applied to impact measurement of social good programs; algorithmic privacy and fairness in the context of social good and ethical use of algorithmics.
