RAISING GIRLS' AMBITION (RAGA 2020)
Raising Girls Ambition (RAGA) is a project that has taken a central role in the struggle for women, and indeed the Girl-child’s right to a meaningful physical, mental, emotional and socially developed life, in a society that is patriarchal. Raising Girls’ Ambition Conference was conceived to bring together Researchers, Development Practitioners, Policy makers, Educational institutions, Students in Tertiary and Secondary Schools and other Stakeholders who have concern for the development of the girl-child. RAGA conferences therefore bring to the front burner issues that would help girls’ ambitions to be raised. The Conferences feature presentations from international and national NGOs, academia, policy makers, legal practitioners and health workers; as well as Essay and Creative Arts Competition for Secondary School Girls.
The Maiden edition of the Conference was held in 2015 at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, with the theme – “Girl-Child Education: Pathway to Sustainable Development”; while the 2nd, 3rd and 4th editions (2016; 2017; 2018; 2019) were hosted in partnership with Lead City University, Ibadan, with the themes: “Combating Violence against Women and the Girl-child in Africa and Beyond: Emerging Issues”; Advancing Women’s Leadership for Sustainable Development in Africa and Beyond”; Equipping Girls for Involvement in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) for Sustainable Development”; and “Debunking Stereotypes: Empowering Women and Girls for the Digital World for Sustainable Development” respectively. This year, participants will discuss the context and essential advantages of advancing women’s careers in different fields of endeavour, having women as key players in the board room and key leadership positions, removing barriers that debar early and mid-career women from advancement using the multi-disciplinary approach. The Pre-conference will feature Essay, Inter-School Debate and Creative Arts Project, and Quiz Competitions as well as career talk and virtual excursion for Secondary School Girls. Keynote and Lead papers shall be presented as well as papers and workshops from budding and established academia.
