RAISING GIRLS' AMBITION (RAGA 2021)
Raising Girls Ambition (RAGA) is a project that has taken a central role in the struggle for women, and indeed the Girl-child’s right to a meaningful physical, mental, emotional and socially developed life, in a society that is patriarchal. The Maiden edition of the Conference was held in 2015 at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, with the theme – “Girl-Child Education: Pathway to Sustainable Development”; while the 2nd, 3rd and 4th editions (2016; 2017; 2018; 2019; 2020) were hosted in partnership with Lead City University, Ibadan, with the themes: “Combating Violence against Women and the Girl-child in Africa and Beyond: Emerging Issues”; Advancing Women’s Leadership for Sustainable Development in Africa and Beyond”; Equipping Girls for Involvement in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) for Sustainable Development”; and “Debunking Stereotypes: Empowering Women and Girls for the Digital World for Sustainable Development” and Advancing Women's Career for Sustainable Development respectively. This year, participants will discuss the context of the interception of gender and power on work ethics, industry, politics and social relations using the multi-disciplinary approach. The Pre-conference will feature Essay, Inter-School Debate and Creative Arts Project, and Quiz Competitions as well as career talk and virtual excursion for Secondary School Girls. Keynote and Lead papers shall be presented as well as papers and workshops from budding and established academia.
Background
Gender refers to the characteristics of women, men, girls and boys that are socially constructed. This includes norms, behaviours and roles associated with being a woman, man, girl or boy, as well as relationships with each other. As a social construct, gender varies from society to society and can change over time. Power is the ability to do or act; capability of doing or accomplishing something. Social change involves alteration of the social order of a society. It may include changes in social institutions, social behaviours or social relations. The theory of gendered power gaps is mostly used to analyse gender inequality that is prevalent in the political arena. Gender differences are about the inequality of power or rank, with men granted higher status by their gender than women. The issue of gender inequality in politics has been a global discourse since the 1980s (Lombardo, 2008). While examining the gender gap in politics and across Europe, Lovenduski (2005) explained that the political institutions in Spain best describe a phenomenon that is rooted in the culture of masculinity all in the name of power. Politics and power are like a siamen twins that cannot be separated. Power was described by Mendelberg and Karpowitz (2016) as the sine qua non of politics and thus of political psychology an d other areas of social relations; health, business, education, agriculture, livelihood, religion and the industry. Thus, whatever shapes power is important. When people exercise their voice, gender impacts how power is instantiated, enhanced, or undermined. It does so in ways that are both open and subtle, by means that could be political, psychological, and at the same time (Mendelberg and Karpowitz (2016). Baskaran et al (2018) point out that male lawmakers are around three times more likely than female legislators to have criminal charges pending against them when they stand for election to further their stance on the need for more female involvement in politics, power and decision-making. The study estimated that about one-fourth of the gap in growth between male and female-led constituencies can be explained by this. If the authors endorse this outcome with estimates of real corruption in government, calculated as the pace at which lawmakers accumulate assets while in office, we find that among women this is ten percentage points lower than among men each year. These results are consistent with experimental evidence that women are more equitable, risk-averse, and less likely than men to participate in criminal and other risky conducts. When you have lots of power, you have a wide range of acceptable behavior, a lot of leeway in what you can say and do, but when you lack power, your range of acceptable behavior narrows. Gender is not only a cause but also a consequence, instrument and embodiment of power-over relations. It is a key mechanism through which power not only constrains but constitutes individuals and is perhaps the most persistent form of ‘invisible power’ in our world.
