About the Conference:
Othello's Island is a well-established annual conference that aims to explore Byzantine, Medieval, Renaissance and early-modern artistic, literary, social and cultural history, and their subsequent legacies, in a truly multidisciplinary way (we love papers on Shakespeare and Othello, but we also love papers on a diverse range of other topics!)
Now in its six year, this interdisciplinary conference brings together academics, researchers and research students from all over the world, and covers a wide range of topics relating to the Medieval, Renaissance and early modern periods, in a stunning medieval city location.
CALL FOR PAPERS
Full Papers (20 minutes talk plus questions)
If you are interested in giving a talk at the conference please submit a proposal for a paper. Standard papers are 20 minutes long, followed by 5 or 10 minutes for questions.
We are very open minded on the topic of papers, so if you have an idea for a presentation that is not covered by the suggestions given above please feel free to submit a proposal, or contact us first to discuss the idea.
Thematic papers on Art History, Literature, Archaeology, History, Social and Poltical History, Cultural Studies and the Colonial and Post-Colonial legacy and use of medieval and renaissance history are welcome, but we also welcome 'wildcard' papers that do not fit into standard categories, and papers which are highly speculative and formative.
As our title suggests, we welcome papers on Othello and Shakespeare, but we are a interdisciplinary conference, and welcome papers on topics ranging from Byzantine icon paintings, to the writings of Aphra Behn, or from Medieval manuscripts to the wine trade in Renaissance Europe (and much more besides).
Please visit our website for more information on the focus of the conference at www.othellosisland.org
Proposals for papers should include a cover sheet at the front of the paper showing:
1. Your title (eg. Mr, Ms, Dr, Prof. etc.) and full name
2. Your institutional affiliation (if any)
3. Your postal address, e'mail address and telephone number
4. The title of your proposed paper
All papers must be delivered in English. We regret we cannot accept Skype or other distance presentations, although we do welcome proposals for group, round-table or other collective forms of presentation.
The deadline for submissions of proposals is 22 December 2017. Early submission is strongly advised. We aim to have a decision on the acceptance of papers within four weeks of submission.
FREE ACCOMMODATION FOR SPEAKERS AGED UNDER 36 (LIMITED AVAILABILITY)
To encourage early career academics and research students we are able to offer a limited amount of free shared hostel living accommodation in Nicosia for the duration of the conference, for speakers aged 35 or under. Please indicate on your submission if you would like to be considered for this.
If you have any questions please do contact the lead convenor, Dr Michael Paraskos at info@othellosisland.org
