Meeting description
The Manchester Forum in Linguistics (mFiL) is an annual international conference which brings together new researchers from every field of linguistics. The aim of the event is to share current work, results and problems and to provide information and advice for postgraduate students, post-doctoral scholars, and early-career researchers. This includes the presentation of papers, posters, a careers panel and plenary talks. This eighth instalment of mFiL will be held online on 28-29th April 2021. Registration for the conference will be free.
Submission Guidelines
Submissions for oral and poster presentations in all areas of linguistics are welcomed. Preference will be given to abstracts which contain implications for linguistic theory or employ a novel methodology.
Oral presentations will be delivered live online. Please note, the time zones of all speakers will be accommodated in the scheduling of the conference. Talks should last 20 minutes with an additional 10 minutes allocated for questions, comments and discussion.
Poster presentations will be presented during a dedicated session on the schedule. Accepted authors will be invited to submit a short video explanation of their poster (up to 3 minutes), which will be available in advance. During the scheduled poster session, authors will interact with attendees in break out rooms.
The deadline for submissions has been extended to 29 January 2021 (midnight GMT). Authors are permitted to submit a maximum of one single-authored paper and one co-authored paper or a total of two co-authored papers.
Abstracts should be up to a maximum of 750 words, including references and optional extras such as glossed examples, tables, figures, etc. The abstract title, author name(s), institution(s) and e-mail address(es) are excluded from the word count. It is not necessary to specify the word count in your abstract.
Authors are asked to use one of the templates provided below to produce a PDF to be submitted for consideration.
— LaTeX template (.tex), sample bibliography file (.bib), bibliography style file (.bst)
— Microsoft Word template (.doc; also usable in OpenOffice, LibreOffice and Pages)
The format of these templates is an A4-sized page with 2.5cm margins on all sides using a single-spaced 12pt serif font, specifically Junicode (freely available to download here: http://junicode.sourceforge.net/). Authors may alternatively use another, similar serif font.
Abstracts must be fully anonymous. To this end, do not include your name or institution in the text or metadata of the submitted file. Please also make sure that any references to your own work are in the third person. If your abstract is accepted, you will be asked to supply an editable, revised, non-anonymous version.
Submissions will be made through EasyChair at: https://easychair.org/my/conference?conf=mfil2021. If you have not previously registered with EasyChair, you will need to do so in order to submit an abstract. Upon submission, you will be asked whether you would like your abstract to be considered for an oral presentation, poster presentation, or either of the two.
Best-abstract competition
This year, a prize will be offered to the best single-authored or co-authored abstract.
Notification of acceptance
We anticipate that notifications of acceptance will be sent via e-mail by the end of February 2021.
