5th International Open & Distance Learning Conference- IODL 202228-30 September 2022
The theme for the IODL 2022 is “Disruptive Change”.
Crisis situations require the society to restructure and redefine itself, usually in unconventional ways and in a disruptive manner. Covid-19 Pandemic has dramatically deepened and accelerated the overdue transformational change pressures in education, particularly in an era when digital technologies have already been imposing societal changes and transformational pressures on every domain of life including education. Along with the changing learner profiles, and new demands of the professional and social realms; disruptive movements such as openness in education including Open Educational Resources (OER), Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), and Microlearning and Micro-credentials, among others, have profound impact on the tertiary educational landscape. These challenges require the higher educational institutions (HEIs) to respond by increasing their competitive positions providing high-quality formal, non-formal as well as informal learning opportunities in an era rife with crisis situations that compel HEIs to adopt to rapid digital transformation and disruptive technological innovations.
By definition, a disruption implies a sudden break or interruption. Disruption in education implies that HEIs leave their comfort zones encouraging them to break the shackles of the conventional, established educational models of knowledge transmission. The disruptive innovations that reshape the landscape of education replace or displace existing models, interrupt the functioning of established educational models, and provide new ways of understanding into what it means to learn and function during a time of disruptive change. Disruptive educational innovation replaces existing methodologies and modes of knowledge transmission by opening new alternatives for learning. It also introduces new advances in education systems through information and communication technologies.
Digital transformation movement in tertiary education is predicted to continually expand after the COVID-19 pandemic. Research conducted with the participation of more than 360 universities in Europe revealed that 95% of these universities have prioritized digital transformation in learning & teaching in their five-year strategic plans. Furthermore, European Council recommendation dated 10 Dec. 2021 entitled “Proposal for a Council Recommendation on a European approach to micro-credentials for lifelong learning and employability” encourages the national studies on micro-credentials to be completed by 2025. Moreover, the European Universities Association (EUA) Council envisions a future where digital learning will be among the dominant forces in HEIs in their “Universities without walls – A vision for 2030” vision statement. EUA warns that “we are a tipping point, a time of transformation for society and universities”. Great responsibilities lie on the shoulders of HEIs to ensure “we” – with inclusion emphasis deeper than ever before - make a smooth and effective transition in these crisis times. The questions, however, still remain unanswered: How can HEIs effectively respond to the disruptive change pressures triggered by digital transformation, innovative technologies, and unexpected crisis situations? How can HEIs deal with the inequalities deepened by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic? In what ways and capacities can the HEIs transform the current crisis into opportunities for development and advancement of the society? What critical leadership can the HEIs demonstrate for crisis and change management to better address the demands of the society? What does the future hold for higher education landscape considering the deep impact of digital technologies?
To answer these questions, papers on the following topics within the context of "disruptive change" in education are welcome:
