Please note that conference fees have been waived and that graduate students and others without funding can apply for financial support.
The 21st Biennial Meeting of the International Circle of Korean Linguistics (ICKL21) will be held at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia on 10-12 July 2019 (arrival and banquet on 10 July; conference presentations on 11-12). This will be the second international conference since the merger of the Harvard-ISOKL (Harvard International Symposium on Korean Linguistics) into the ICKL (International Circle of Korean Linguistics).
By holding the conference in Melbourne, ICKL will return to Australia for the first time in 23 years, and this will be only the second ICKL conference in the Southern Hemisphere. We will celebrate the relaunch of the Korean Studies program at Monash University.
We welcome abstracts for papers on any aspect of Korean language and linguistics including, but not limited to; Phonetics, Phonology, Morphology, Syntax, Semantics, Pragmatics, Historical-Comparative Linguistics, Psycholinguistics, Cognitive Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Discourse & Grammaticalisation, First & Second Language Acquisition, and Language Education.
Guidelines for abstract submission:
We welcome abstracts touching on any of the above-listed (or related) fields for oral presentation (20 minute talk and 10 minute discussion). Abstracts must be submitted electronically to the following address:

Abstracts must be submitted as a single-spaced page, 1-inch margins all around, and in Times 12-point font. It should be submitted in the pdf format. If you need to use phonetic characters, please make sure that they are displayed correctly and embed the special fonts into the document. The content can be any combination of text, figures, tables, and examples. References can be optionally given on the 2nd page.
Abstracts will be reviewed anonymously and therefore must exclude all references to the author(s).
Fees and Travel Grants
Thanks to a grant from the Academy of Korean Studies of the Republic of Korea, no conference fees will be charged to participants who are presenting papers. Presenters will be provided with two lunches, one conference dinner and one reception free of charge.
An ICKL membership of $50 AUD will need to be paid upon registration. Participants will be responsible for arranging their own transportation and hotel accommodation.
We are able to award a small number of travel grants of around $300-500 AUD to graduate students and others with limited travel resources. To apply for a travel grant, please send a one-page word file as an email attachment to the conference organizers (ickl2019@gmail.com). The file should contain the following information:
- Your name and affiliation
- An estimate of your travel and accommodation expenses
- A short paragraph explaining your need for a travel grant
Non-presenting participants will need to pay a registration fee of $250 AUD on top of the ICKL membership fee.
