The 7th International Conference on Education in Muslim Society (ICEMS) 2021
Background
The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the way we live in every respect. It has undoubtedly had disruptive impacts on nearly every aspect of our life including the education sector. Now, as we enter the second year living with the pandemic, half of the student population at the global level is still affected by full or partial school closures potentially leading to student learning loss. To overcome the danger of this learning loss, transitioning to online learning with various platforms (synchronous or asynchronous) has become a new normal worldwide. Teachers and students are getting used to different forms of classroom transformation from in-person to hybrid (blended) to online classrooms facilitated and enhanced by technological innovations. Indeed, the pandemic appears to have accelerated digital transformation in the education sector to a level never witnessed before. We are now living in a shifting education landscape where the roles of students, teachers, and technologies in teaching and learning contexts have changed dramatically. Faced with this new educational reality, students, teachers, and educators in general have no better choice but to embrace it, to adjust to it, and to make it part of their empowering mindset. However, worldwide experience so far suggests that transitioning to a new normal in a shifting education landscape has come up with unique obstacles and difficulties in many parts of the world ranging from infrastructure issues, human resource capacity, and overall readiness for adopting technological innovations in education practice. Responding to those challenges, UNESCO has recommended that all governments of its member states do their best in providing learning opportunities to minimize students’ learning loss, supporting teachers in dealing with online or hybrid learning modes, and ensuring effective integration of digital transformation into education practice at all levels (UNESCO, 2021). Each year, the Faculty of Educational Science (FITK), State Islamic University (UIN) Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta organizes the International Conference on Education in Muslim Society (ICEMS). Responding to the global educational challenge during the pandemic briefly illustrated above, this year the 7th International Conference on Education in Muslim Society (ICEMS) is specially organized under the main theme: "Embracing the New Normal: Changing Roles of Students, Teachers, and Technologies in Shifting Education Landscape.
